Findlay Earns Split with ODU | Secures Fifth Straight 30-Win Season

Findlay, Ohio- The University of Findlay softball team split a pair of games against the Ohio Dominican University Panthers on Tuesday, April 14. The Oilers dropped the opener 6-3 before bouncing back to take the rain-delayed nightcap, 8-6. With the result, Findlay improves to 30-10 overall, marking its fifth consecutive 30-win season, and sits at 13-4 in conference play, currently third in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) standings. Ohio Dominican moves to 19-19 overall and 10-4 in the league.

Game One (L 6-3)
After a scoreless first inning, Findlay struck first in the bottom of the second when freshman Sophie Retton launched a solo home run to left-center, giving the Oilers a 1-0 lead. Ohio Dominican answered in the top of the fourth with a solo shot of its own to even the score.

Findlay struggled in the top of the fifth, surrendering five runs on four hits to the visiting Panthers, with all five coming with two outs. It was Ohio Dominican who then held a 6-1 lead through five and a half innings.

The Oilers recorded runs in the bottom of the fifth and seventh but it wouldn't prove enough as they went on to take the 6-3 loss.

Retton and junior Joslynne Frazier paced the offense, each going 2-for-4 at the plate while recording a home run for the Orange and Black. Retton drove in two runs, and both players crossed the plate once.

Senior Alexys Antal was charged with the loss in the circle, dropping to 14-3 on the season and suffering her first defeat since mid-March against Parkside. She worked 4.2 innings, allowing six runs on six hits while striking out one. Freshman Kaylynn Carter provided relief, tossing 2.1 scoreless innings and giving up just two hits.

Game Two (W 8-6)
After keeping the Panthers off the board to start the game, the Oilers immediately responded in the bottom half of the inning. The scoring began with a single to center field from junior Joslynne Frazier that drove in the first run. Sophomore Meghan Heinsman followed with a single that brought home another, and a throwing error later in the frame allowed Frazier to score, giving Findlay an early 3-0 lead.

After retiring the next three batters in order, Findlay's offense quickly regained momentum. Frazier delivered another single, this time to right field, scoring senior Cassie Warner after her leadoff hit. Anna Jones followed with a well-placed bunt single that brought home another run, pushing the lead to 4-0. Freshman Sophie Retton then doubled to right field to drive in a run, and Meghan Heinsman capped the inning with a sacrifice fly, extending the Oilers' advantage to 6-0 after two innings.

Ohio Dominican broke through in the top of the third, scoring three runs on three hits to cut the lead to 7-3. It wasn't until the bottom of the sixth that the Oilers added another run thanks to senior Annika Bredel who singled to left field to give Findlay an 8-3 advantage before a weather delay suspended the game for nearly an hour.

Needing three outs to secure the win, Findlay allowed a leadoff home run that cut the lead to 8-4. Later in the frame, a two-out, two-run homer brought the Panthers within striking distance at 8-6. The Oilers then turned to freshman Kaylynn Carter in the circle, as she forced a groundout to end the threat and seal the 8-6 victory for Findlay.

Joslynne Frazier once again paced the offense, going 2-for-4 at the plate while scoring two runs and driving in two. Cassie Warner was perfect on the day, finishing 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Meghan Heinsman also contributed two RBIs for the Oilers.

Senior Kayla Dykin earned the win in the circle for Findlay, improving to 7-3 on the season. She tossed six innings before the delay, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out six. Senior Kora Navarro appeared in relief, working 0.2 innings and surrendering three runs on two hits. Freshman Kaylynn Carter ultimately closed things out to secure the save, her second of the season.

Findlay will return to action on Saturday, April 18, hosting Walsh University. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
