Hillsdale, Mich. – The University of Findlay baseball team split a doubleheader against Hillsdale College on Friday, April 17. Findlay won the opener in a massive blowout by a score of 21-2 before dropping the nightcap by a score of 5-3. The split gives the Oilers a record of 25-15 with a 16-6 mark in Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) play while Hillsdale moves to 18-20 overall and 12-10 in the G-MAC.

Game 1 (W 21-2)

Findlay struck first with an explosive seven runs in the top of the first inning, completely controlling the series opener from the very beginning.

The Oilers' massive first-inning rally was sparked by a leadoff double from Nick Palm and an RBI single by Casey Maruniak, before Gavyn Smith delivered the biggest blow with a bases-clearing, three-run triple to right field.

Findlay expanded their advantage with five more runs in the second inning, before adding two in the sixth and seven final insurance runs in the seventh to cap off the 21-run performance.

Starting pitcher Ethan Mohr earned the win, improving to 5-1 on the season. Mohr pitched 5.0 innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits while walking just one batter. Connor Evanich pitched in relief to secure the victory.

Offensively, Casey Maruniak and Gavyn Smith led the way with three hits each. Maruniak scored three runs and drove in three, while Senften added three runs scored and two RBIs. Keegan Snyder also contributed a multi-hit game, tallying two hits, two runs, and an RBI while Smith scored a couple runs and drove in three.

Game 2 (L 5-3)

Hillsdale opened the scoring with a massive five-run frame in the bottom of the first inning, putting the Oilers in a quick 5-0 hole.

Findlay attempted to slowly chip away at the deficit in the middle innings. The Oilers scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning and added a single run in the top of the fifth to make it 5-3.

Despite outhitting Hillsdale 6-5 in the contest, the Oilers were unable to close the gap further. Luke Senften provided the biggest blow for the offense with a two-run double, while Nick Palm and Mason Myers also added doubles in the loss.

Starting pitcher Carson Mellott took the loss for Findlay, throwing 5.2 innings and allowing three earned runs on five hits.

The two teams will wrap up the series on Monday, April 20.
