Tiffin, Ohio - The University of Findlay baseball team split a doubleheader against Tiffin University on Monday, April 6. Findlay won the first game 4-3 before falling in the series finale 8-4. The split moves the Oilers' overall record to 22-11 and 13-3 in G-MAC play.
Game 1 (W 4-3)
Findlay defeated Tiffin 4-3, using a three-run rally in the final inning to secure the comeback victory. The Oilers took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning when Mike Sciortinom, who singled with two outs, scored on an error. That score remained until the sixth inning when Tiffin took control, scoring three runs to take a 3-1 advantage in the seven-inning game.
In the top of the seventh, Casey Maruniak reached on an error to spark the rally. Luke Senften then delivered an RBI double to left-center field to cut the deficit to one. Following the double, Gavyn Smith provided the game-changing at bat, a two-run home run to right field, providing the winning margin for the Oilers.
Starting pitcher Aidan Kiessling turned in a strong performance, pitching 5.2 innings and allowing only one earned run while striking out six. Colin Becker and Sebastian Stevens entered in relief to record three outs before Camdon Tuttle came in to retire the final batter of the game to earn the save.
Game 2 (L 8-4)
Findlay fell to Tiffin 8-4 in the second game of the doubleheader despite matching the Dragons with 11 hits. Tiffin took an early lead in the first inning on a solo home run. The Oilers briefly took a 3-1 lead in the third inning, highlighted by a two-run home run from Gavyn Smith.
Tiffin regained the lead with three runs in the fifth inning and added four insurance runs in the bottom of the ninth. The Oilers tied the game in the top of the sixth on an Aiden Booth home run, but a grand slam with two outs in the bottom of the ninth sent the Dragons into a frenzy, earning a split.
Luke Senften led the offense in the second game, finishing 2-for-4 with a run scored. Gavyn Smith added a hit and two RBIs, while Casey Maruniak, Mason Myers, and Aiden Booth each recorded hits in the contest.
Starting pitcher David Jimenez pitched 4.1 innings, allowing four runs on six hits and striking out seven. Camdon Tuttle took the loss in relief.
Findlay is back in action tomorrow in Utica, Michigan for a game against Saginaw Valley State. That contest will begin at 3:00 pm.
