Softball Makes History | Wins First-Ever Great Midwest Championship

Akron, Ohio- The University of Findlay softball team made history on Saturday, May 2 at Firestone Stadium, capturing its first-ever conference title with a 9-5 victory over Ashland University to win the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Championship. With the win, the Oilers earn an automatic berth to the NCAA Midwest Regional and improve to 39-12 on the season. Ashland drops to 32-17 after suffering back-to-back losses to Findlay.

Findlay struck first in the bottom of the opening inning, as junior Anna Jones lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to give the Oilers an early lead. Later in the inning, junior Joslynne Frazier delivered a single to second base that brought home sophomore Meghan Heinsman, who had reached on a double to left, extending the advantage to 2-0.

The Oilers added to their lead in the bottom of the second, plating two more runs. Senior Alexys Antal forced an error that brought home the Oilers' third run, and senior Annika Bredel followed with a triple to left-center to make it 4-0 after two innings. The offense stayed hot in the third, as senior Kayla Dykin delivered a two-RBI single to left field to extend the advantage.

Leading 6-0, Findlay opened the inning with a single to right field from senior Aurora Lescody, prompting a pitching change by Ashland. Senior Alexys Antal followed with a double to center, driving in Lesody to keep the rally going. Sophomore Meghan Heinsman then recorded a ground out to first that brought Antal home, extending the lead to 8-0. Junior Anna Jones capped the scoring with a double to left field, pushing the advantage to 9-0.

Ashland got on the board with three runs in the fifth and added two more in the sixth in an attempt to rally, but it wasn't enough as the Oilers secured the 9-5 victory.

Anna Jones paced Findlay's offense, going 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI. Joslynne Frazier and Aurora Lescody each tallied two hits, with Lescody finishing a perfect 2-for-2. Alexys Antal and Annika Bredel both scored twice to lead the Oilers.

Senior Alexys Antal tossed five innings for the Oilers, earning her 19th win of the season. She allowed five runs on seven hits while striking out two. Kora Navarro provided strong relief, closing out the final two innings while surrendering just one hit and no runs.

This marks Findlay's first conference title in program history, as the Oilers completed a perfect 4-0 run through the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Tournament. Entering the event with a 13-14 all-time record, Findlay earned wins over fifth-seeded Hillsdale (13-5), top-seeded Tiffin (8-5), and third-seeded Ashland (15-1) before claiming the championship. The victory also secured the program's 39th win of the season, setting a new single-season record and surpassing the previous mark of 38 wins set in 2022.

Findlay now awaits the NCAA Division II Selection Show, where it will learn its postseason fate. The show is scheduled for Monday, May 11 at 10 a.m.
