Findlay Edges Hillsdale in Pitchers' Duel to Reach Pool Play Final

Mason, Ohio- The University of Findlay baseball team advances to the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Championship Pool Play final after defeating seventh-seeded Hillsdale College, 3-2, on Thursday, May 7 at Prasco Park. Third-seeded Findlay used dominant pitching to remain perfect in the tournament. With the win, the Oilers improve to 34-18 on the season while Hillsdale falls to 22-28.

The game remained scoreless through six innings before Hillsdale College broke through in the top of the seventh, taking a 1-0 lead on an unearned run following a Findlay error.

The Chargers added another run in the top of the eighth to extend their advantage to 2-0, but the Findlay responded immediately in the bottom half with a decisive rally. Senior Casey Maruniak sparked the inning with a double to right-center, and senior Gavyn Smith followed with a single to drive in the Oilers' first run and cut the deficit to one. Sophomore Mason Myers then delivered the big swing, launching a two-run home run to right field to give Findlay a 3-2 lead.

Needing three outs to seal the win, the Oilers' pitching and defense held firm. Back-to-back outs came on a groundout and a lineout before a late single briefly threatened the lead. However, Findlay closed the door, ending the game on a flyout to center field.

Myers paced the offense for Findlay, finishing 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI. Maruniak went 2-for-3 and scored one of the Oilers' three runs, while freshman Drew Tucker stayed perfect, going 2-for-2.

On the mound, senior Ethan Mohr delivered a strong start, working 6.1 innings and allowing just four hits and one run while striking out four. Senior Colin Becker handled the final 2.2 innings in relief, earning the win to improve to 5-2 on the season. He allowed four hits and one earned run while striking out one.

The Oilers continue their run at the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Baseball Championship, advancing to the Pool Play Final. They will take on the winner of Game Nine, with first pitch scheduled for noon.
