Ron Ammons, who spent 13 seasons as the University of Findlay head softball coach (2003-2015), is now in his first year as a volunteer assistant with the program in 2024.
As the head coach, Ammons recorded 233 wins and coached his players to 41 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) All-Conference awards including the 2016 GLIAC Pitcher of the Year Chelsea McManaway and GLIAC Commissioner's Award winners Calli Coppus (2011) and Katie Ammons (2009). While at UF, Ammons also spent time as the chair of the Oilers Athletic Hall of Fame committee (2008-16) as well as an assistant sports information director.
Ammons led the Oilers to a 23-19 record in 2014 as they qualified for the GLIAC Tournament. The Oilers began the tournament by upsetting top-seeded Ohio Dominican University before losing their next two games. In 2013, Ammons guided the Oilers to their finest season at the NCAA Division II level at the time, finishing 27-15. They eventually went 2-2 in the GLIAC Tournament and narrowly missed out on qualifying for the NCAA Division II Tournament.
After retiring from Findlay at the end of the 2015 season, Ammons coached baseball and golf at Findlay High for seven seasons. He now spends most of his time following his six grandsons in their athletics.
A 1981 graduate of UF with a degree in sociology and psychology, Ammons earned three letters for the Oilers baseball team as a pitcher and infielder. Upon graduation, Ammons worked for 18 years as a professional director in the areas of youth and sports with the Findlay YMCA and also served as the head softball coach at Findlay High School from 1989-90.
Ammons, who earned his master’s degree in 1991 from Bowling Green State University, currently serves as the head baseball coach at Findlay High School and since 2004 has authored or co-authored several books on local military history.
