Oilers Eliminated In GLIAC Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Findlay, OH – The University of Findlay softball team was eliminated on day 1 of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) conference tournament, which took place on Friday, May 1 at the Marathon Diamonds in Findlay where the tournament is being held through the weekend.  The Oilers lost their first game 6-4 against Ashland University then went on to lose 4-0 against Saginaw Valley State University in the consolation bracket.

In the game against Ashland, Chelsea McManaway took the loss on the mound for the Oilers (15-7).  She struck out six batters and scattered four hits over four innings of work.  Jenna Inman took over for the final two innings of the contest and gave up three hits and struck out one batter.

The Oilers were down 3-1 through the first three innings, then they went on to score three runs in the top of the fourth to take a 4-3 lead, but unfortunately the Oilers lead was short lived as the Eagles knocked in three more runs to claim the 6-4 victory.

Kelsey Borders had a big game at the plate for the Oilers as she finished hitting 2-of-3 with an RBI triple and a single while Megan Turner finished hitting 2-of-4 with a triple, a single and one run scored.

Katie Dunphy finished the game hitting 2-of-3 with two singles and one run batted in while Jenna Huff went 1-of-2 in the contest with a run scored.

Hayley Apple pinched hit in the game and went 1-of-1 with a single while Brooke Scherger added a single.

In the game against Saginaw Valley, Jenna Inman took the loss on the mound for the Oilers (4-5).  She struck out two batters and scattered four hits over 4.2 innings of work.  Bonnie Zappitelli took over for the final 1.1 innings of the contest and she gave up two hits and struck out one batter.

The game was scoreless through the first four innings as neither team could get any offense rolling.  Then, to the Oilers chagrin, Saginaw Valley scored a combined four runs in the fifth and sixth inning as they claimed a 4-0 victory and eliminate the Oilers from the conference tournament.

Lauren Trumpler finished the game with a single while Megan Turner also finished with a single.

Kelsey Borders, Hayley Apple and Brooke Scherger each finished with a single in the contest.

The Oilers ended their season with a 26-23 record and it marked the end of an era as head coach Ron Ammons announced his retirement after 13 years at the helm.
