Oilers Split Against Ursuline

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Pepper Pike, OH – The University of Findlay softball team split a Great Midwest Athletic Conference double-header against Ursuline College on Thursday, April 26. The games bring the Oilers to a 25-18 overall record, with a 15-3 record in the league. The Arrows move to a 13-27 overall record, with a 8-13-1 record in the G-MAC.

Game 1 | W 6 – 3 (Box Score)

The Oilers won this one thanks to a huge lead that was captured in the first inning by scoring five of their six total runs.

The inning began on a leadoff double to right field from senior Meredith Shepherd, who later advanced to second on an Allison Brunner walk.

Amanda Delmonte followed up with a single through the right side to load the bases.

The first run of the game was scored during the next at-bat, when Evyn Kachenmeister was hit by a pitch.

A passed ball accounted for the next run, followed by a sacrifice fly from the bat of Madison Arnold.

After another single from Salwa Al-Hajabed, senior Kelley Cejer delivered an RBI single to leftfield that scored Kachenmiester for the Oilers fourth run of the inning.

Destinie Keeton then crossed the plate on an RBI single from freshman Brooke Otto, scoring the fifth run of the inning for Findlay.

The next three and a half innings of play saw no runs scored from either team, until the Oilers added one more run to their lead in the top of the fifth.

Arnold began the inning with a leadoff single up the middle and stole second base during the next at-bat.

With Arnold now in scoring position, Cejer hit her second RBI of the game down the left field line to bring the score to 6-0 in favor of the Oilers.

The Arrows did not go away silently, as their offense scored two in the bottom of the fifth and another in the bottom of the sixth.

It would be too little, too late though for Ursuline, popping out for the first out of the bottom of the seventh and then getting doubled up on a line drive two batters later.

Junior Hailey Bryan started and received the victory for the Oilers, allowing two hits and zero runs on four innings pitched while recording one strikeout. Bryan is now 13-5 on the year.

Freshman Devyn Zuro provided relief out of the bullpen and captured her first save of the season. In her three innings, Zuro allowed five hits and three runs (all earned) while recording two strikeouts and walking two batters.

Game 2 | L 2 – 3 (Box Score)

The second game of the double-header was a battle down to the last inning, where the Oilers would fall victim to a walkoff victory by way of an error.

Findlay began the scoring in the top of the third, beginning with a single up the middle from Meredith Shepherd.

After another single from Allison Brunner, Amanda Delmonte knocked a two RBI double to the right field fence that scored Brunner and Shepherd.

The Arrows responded in the bottom half of the inning on a single up the middle of their own that put the score at 2-1 in favor of the Oilers.

The Findlay offense would not be able to achieve any insurance runs in the following innings, failing to get a runner further than second base for the remainder of the game.

Facing a one run deficit, the Ursuline Arrows faced their last chance to catch the Oilers in the bottom of the seventh.

Ursuline took full advantage, loading the bases and then scoring two runs to win the game on an error from the second basemen.

Starting the game and receiving the loss on the mound was Caragyn Yanek, who in her 6.1 innings pitched allowed eight hits, three runs (one earned), and one walk while recording one strikeout.

The Oilers will continue play on Saturday, April 28 when they travel to Cedarville for another G-MAC double-header beginning at 12:00 PM.
