Oilers Softball Splits on Opening Day

Nashville, TN- The University of Findlay's Softball team started their regular season with a double header down in Tennessee on Saturday Feb 19. The Oilers picked up their first win of the year in game one against Missouri S&T 9-3. However they dropped game two against Southern Indiana losing 5-1.

Game One- Vs Missouri S&T (W 9-3)

Findlay started the season off hot by scoring in the second inning when Junior Bailey Bates singled, driving in senior Kayla Snow. Later that inning freshman Rachel Mease drove in junior Olivia Colten with an infield hit.

Missouri S&T put on the pressure, scoring a run in the bottom half of the second inning and following that up with a three run homerun in the third. 

From then on it was all Oilers. Bates drove in another run in the fourth inning putting Findlay back in the lead. Colten added on with two more RBIs of her own in the fifth inning. Not to be outdone, sophomore Avery Shepherd drove in two runs of her own in the sixth inning. 

The Oilers would go on to score 2 more runs in the sixth inning off of wild pitches and errors.

Senior Devyn Zuro, senior Megan Demler, senior Kyla Snow, senior Lexie Hilling, and freshmen Alissa Davis also recorded hits for the Oilers who would end with 13 on the game.

On the mound Megan Demler threw all 7 innings and picked up the win. She allowed 3 earned runs and recorded 8 strikeouts with only one walk.

Game Two- Vs Southern Indiana (L 5-1)

Southern indiana started their scoring off in the top half of the second inning when they scored an unearned run on a fielding error. The Oilers responded with a run of their own in the bottom half off an RBI single from Senior Savanah Harvey which scored senior Lyndsey Seamon.

That was all the scoring from the Oilers as they left 9 players on the bases. Southern Indiana tacked on 4 more runs from the fourth inning on.

Junior Bailey Bates, senior Caroline Turner, and senior Lyndsey Seamon (double) recorded hits for the Oilers. Senior Lexie Hilling also went 3-3 at the plate.

On the mound for the Oilers Lexie Hiling recorded the loss and threw 4.1 innings allowing 3 earned runs and recording 2 strikeouts. Freshman Emma Jones also logged 2.2 innings allowing one earned run and racking up 4 strikeouts.

Findlay will be back on the diamond in Tennessee on Feb 20 for another double header  as they take on Rockhurst at 10 AM and Lindenwood at noon.
