Findlay, Ohio- The University of Findlay women's basketball team took on the Edinboro Fighting Scots for just the second time in program history. The teams last faced each other last season, with the Oilers securing a victory in double-overtime. However, tonight's match was markedly different, as Findlay claimed a decisive 69-55 win. With the victory, Findlay advances to 4-1 on the season while Edinboro falls to 1-2 on the year.
In the first frame Findlay got off to a quick start, taking a seven point lead through five minutes. However, a few sloppy fouls late put the Scots back within four heading into the second quarter. The next ten minutes saw back-and-forth action as Findlay added just two points to their lead to bring the score to 27-21 heading into the half.
The Oilers asserted their dominance in the third quarter, outscoring Edinboro 25-7, fueled in part by a 58.82% shooting accuracy from the field. In the final three minutes of the quarter, junior
Chloe Callahan went on a hot-streak scoring eleven straight points, which included three baskets from deep.
With the Oilers leading by 24 after the third quarter, Findlay grew their largest lead at 25 after a three-pointer by freshman MacKenzie Schulz. From there, the home team held all the momentum as they took the win in dominating fashion.
As a team the Oilers were 26-of-63 (41.3%) from the floor while recording an impressive 11-of-27 (40.7%) from deep. They struggled from the charity stripe, going 6-of-11 (54.5%). Meanwhile, they held Edinboro to 19-of-62 (30.6%) from the field while recording just 6-of-26 (23.1%) from beyond the arc. The Scots were able to capitalize from the free throw line, going 11-of-15 (73.3%).
Leading the Oilers offensively was Callahan. She recorded a season-high 14 points. The Columbus, Ohio native was 5-of-9 from the floor including 4-of-7 from deep. Callahan also contributed two rebounds, two assists, and a steal.
Senior Kate Ellis chipped in twelve points, while grabbing two rebounds. Junior Janae Hoying played well for the Oilers as she led the team with four assists while adding eleven points for the Orange and Black. She also grabbed three boards. Leading Findlay in rebounds was sophomore Alyssa Ziehler who recorded eight.
Findlay has now won four of their five games this season, the best start to a campaign since the 2015-16 season. They will look to maintain this momentum as they open Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) play next week as they travel south to take on Trevecca Nazarene and Kentucky Wesleyan, Nov. 28 and Nov. 30.
