Nashville, Tenn. - The University of Findlay women's basketball team went on the road for their 2023 Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) opener on Tuesday, Nov.28. The Oilers suffered a 77-68 defeat at the hands of the Trevecca Nazarene Trojans to fall to 4-2 on the year and 0-1 in the G-MAC. TNU, meanwhile, now sits at 3-3 overall and starts the year 1-0 in conference play.
Findlay, which has now dropped three consecutive games in the series with TNU, jumped out to an 8-0 lead with a pair of buckets each from senior
Kate Ellis and sophomore
Alyssa Ziehler. However, over the next four-and-a-half minutes of play, the Trojans went on a game-changing tear, a 17-0 run in which they made 7-of-9 field goal attempts and held the Oilers to 0-of-6 from the floor.
Clawing their way back, the Oilers would pull to within five points at 69-64 with just under three minutes remaining, but the Orange and Black were kept at arms' length thanks to a pair of triples in the waning minutes.
In the game, Findlay made 25-of-57 (43.9%) from the floor including just 5-of-20 (25%) from three-point range while TNU made 29-of-59 (49.2%) while connecting on 11-of-20 (55%) from deep. Trevecca's big advantage came on the glass where they out-rebounded the Oilers 39-28 including snagging 14 offensive boards.
Findlay had four players score in double figures, led by
Kate Ellis who scored 16 on 8-of-11 from the floor. She, along with
Alyssa Ziehler, tied for the team-lead with six rebounds. Ziehler chipped in 12 points while junior
Janae Hoying had 11 and freshman
Taylor Stanley scored ten. Hoying had a team-high four assists.
The season continues on Thursday, Nov. 30 when the Oilers will take the court in Owensboro, Kentucky to battle with the Kentucky Wesleyan Panthers. That game will tip off at 6:30 pm EST.
