Turnovers Haunt Oilers | Fall Short of Late Game Comeback

Owensboro, Ky.- The University of Findlay Oilers continued their trip south on Thursday, Nov. 30 to take on the Panthers of Kentucky Wesleyan. The Oilers suffered a 67-60 defeat at the hands of the Panthers to fall to 4-3 on the year and 0-2 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC). Kentucky Wesleyan, meanwhile, improves to  5-1 overall and starts the year 1-0 in conference play.

Findlay, which has now dropped three consecutive games in the series with KWC, trailed early due to the Panther's red-hot shooting from beyond the arc as they connected on 6-of-9 from deep in the first quarter. Kentucky Wesleyan took their largest lead of the contest with three minutes left in the half at 43-23. However, five consecutive points by senior Kate Ellis brought the game within 15 entering halftime.

Making major adjustments at the half, the Oilers, over the next four minutes of play ,went on a game-changing tear, an 11-0 run in which they held the Panthers to 0-of-5 from the floor.

Clawing their way back, the Oilers would pull to within five points at 61-56 with just under three minutes remaining, but the Orange and Black were kept at arms' length thanks to purposeful fouls in the final minutes of the contest.

In the game, Findlay made 23-of-56 (41.1%) from the floor including just 3-of-19 (15.8%) from three-point range while KWC made 22-of-59 (37.3%) while connecting on 10-of-32 (31.3%) from deep. Kentucky Wesleyan's big advantage came on turnovers in which they turned the Oiler's 23 turnovers into 25 points.

The Oilers were led by Ellis who recorded her first double-double of the season. She poured in 21 points while grabbing ten boards. The senior was 6-of-16 from the floor but connected on an impressive 9-of-9 from the charity stripe. She also recorded five steals and two assists.

Sophomore Alyssa Ziehler was just shy of a double-double herself as she chipped in 19 points and nine rebounds. Junior Mckenna Stephers added eight points while grabbing five boards.

The Oilers will be back in action as they host Gannon University in Croy Physical Education Center on Dec. 6. That game is scheduled to tipoff at 5:30pm.
