Hammond, Ind.- The University of Findlay women's basketball team went on the road to take on Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) opponent, Purdue Northwest, on Friday, Dec. 15. The Oilers suffered a 67-58 defeat at the hands of the Pride to fall to 5-5 on the year yet remain 1-2 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC). Purdue Northwest, meanwhile, now sits at 5-4 overall with a 1-1 mark in the GLIAC.
In the inaugural meeting of the two teams, the Pride jumped out to an 8-2 lead with a trio of buckets. However, over the next two minutes of play, the Oilers were able to go on a quick run to tie up the contest. From there the quarter saw back-and-forth action. The first half would continue in this form as the Lions led by four at 35-31 through 20 minutes.
Purdue Northwest dominated the third quarter to take a ten point lead heading into the final ten minutes due in part by shooting 60% from the floor in comparison to the Oiler's mere 31.25%.Â
The Pride continued to add to their lead in the final quarter. With the home team led by 13 with nine minutes remaining, Findlay went on a 10-4 run over the next two minutes to trail by just four. Purdue Northwest then hit three consecutive shots beyond the arc to keep the Oilers arms' length for the remainder of the contest.
In the game, Findlay made 23-of-62 (37.1%) from the floor including 6-of-18 (33.3%) from three-point range while PUN made 24-of-50 (48.0%) while connecting on 11-of-24 (45.8%) from deep.Â
Findlay was led by senior Kate Ellis who scored 22 on 9-of-15 from the floor, adding in one triple, and recording a perfect 3-of-3 from the charity stripe. Ellis also grabbed five rebounds. Junior Chloe Callahan recorded 15 points, shooting 4-of-5 from beyond the arc.Â
Junior Janae Hoying added nine points for the Orange and Black while grabbing six boards. Sophomore Alyssa Ziehler led the team in rebounds, grabbing seven while chipping in eight points.
Their season continues on Tuesday, Dec. 19 when the Oilers will take the court in Detroit, Mich. to battle with the Warriors of Wayne State (GLIAC). That game will tip off at 5:30 pm.
