Women's Basketball Stuns Undefeated Ursuline in Overtime Thriller

Findlay, Ohio- The University of Findlay women's basketball team welcomed the Ursuline College Arrows to Croy Physical Education Center for their Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC)-home opener on Saturday, Dec. 9. The Oilers won 82-78 in an overtime thriller to stun the unbeaten Arrows. With the win, the Oilers improve to 5-4 on the season with a 1-2 mark in conference play. Meanwhile, the Arrows are now 8-1 on the season with a 3-1 record in the G-MAC.

The first quarter saw back-and-forth action as the score was tied six times with four different lead changes. The Arrows outscored the Oilers 20-12 in the second quarter to take an eight point lead heading into halftime.

Out of the half, the Oilers chipped away at the lead, scoring the first five points of the third quarter. Junior Mckenna Stephens drilled a three-pointer at the seven-minute mark to put Findlay back within one. However, the Arrows held on to that lead for the next four minutes until junior Janae Hoying hit a three-pointer on a fast break to put the Orange and Black ahead for the first time since early in the first quarter.

With just over two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, the Oilers held a seven point advantage- their largest lead of the game. However, the Arrows wouldn't go down without a fight as they went on a 7-1 run to bring the score to 66-65 in favor of Findlay. A purposeful foul by Ursuline sent Hoying to the line where she gave Findlay a three-point advantage with 13 seconds remaining. With seconds left in the contest, Ursuline's Michaela Cloonan made a deep three-pointer to force the game into overtime.

With just over two minutes remaining in the overtime period, the Oilers held a four-point advantage. Another three-pointer would put the Arrows back into it but with purposeful fouls, senior Kate Ellis was sent to the free-throw line. Ellis knocked down both shots to give the Oilers a three-point lead with 20 seconds remaining. After a defensive rebound, Ellis was sent back to the line once again in which she grew Findlay's lead to five with nine seconds left. The Arrow's hit a pull-up jumper with two seconds remaining but it wasn't enough as Findlay would upset the visitors 82-78.

Leading Findlay was Hoying who recorded a career-high 24 points. She was 7-of-11 from the floor including 5-of-6 from deep. She also recorded five points from the charity stripe. Ellis recorded 23 points, shooting 7-of-16 from the floor and 8-of-10 from the free-throw line.

Sophomore Alyssa Ziehler recorded a double-double on the afternoon. She recorded 16 points while grabbing ten boards. Junior Chloe Callahan recorded eight points while freshman Addisyn Freeman chipped in with eight rebounds.

The Oilers will be back in action Friday, Dec. 15 as they travel to Hammond, Ind. to take on Purdue Northwest of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). That game is scheduled to tipoff at 7pm.
