Midland, Mich. – The University of Findlay women's basketball team went on the road on Saturday, Jan. 6 for a Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) matchup against the Northwood University Timberwolves. Despite a fast start, the Oilers would come up short by a score of 87-76 and fall to 6-7 on the year with a 2-3 mark in the league. With the win, Northwood improves to 8-4 and 4-1 in the G-MAC.
It did not take long for Findlay to continue their momentum from Thursday night's victory as the Oilers jumped out to a 7-0 lead less than three minutes into the game and extended that lead to 10-1 just 30 seconds later. However, over the final 7:00 the Timberwolves outscored the Oilers 25-13 to take a five-point lead into the second quarter.
Northwood would not trail the remainder of the game, although Findlay did pull to within one point at 32-31. Despite that effort, the Oilers trailed 42-35 at the midway point.
The third period is when things unraveled for the visiting team. In that frame the Timberwolves outscored the Oilers 27-14 and hit 12-of-19 field goals while holding Findlay to just 4-of-17. The largest differential came with two minutes left in the quarter when Northwood held a 67-41 lead.
Findlay would outscored the Timberwolves 27-18 in the final period but it was not enough to dig out of the hole created in the third quarter as the Oilers went on to lose by 11.
The Oilers made just 6-of-26 from three-point range and turned the ball over 18 times in the loss. Those 18 turnovers led to 25 points for Northwood.
Sophomore Alyssa Ziehler led the way for Findlay, scoring 19 points and grabbing ten rebounds, securing her second double-double of the season. Senior Kate Ellis chipped in 18 points while senior Lauren Hapgood added 13, a season-high.
Findlay returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 11 when they play host to Thomas More University in Croy Gymnasium. That game will tip at 5:30 pm.
