Findlay Wraps Up Preseason with Exhibition at Toledo

Toledo, Ohio – The University of Findlay women's basketball team suffered an 87-54 defeat at the hands of the University of Toledo Rockets in an exhibition contest on Sunday, Oct. 27 in Savage Arena. The game served as the final tune-up of the preseason for both squads which will both kick off their 2024-25 campaigns over the course of the next week.

An early triple by sophomore Taylor Stanley put the Oilers ahead 3-2, the only lead of the game for the Orange and Black against their NCAA Division I opponent. Another three ball later in the quarter, this one by senior Ariyah Douglas, made the score 15-12 in favor of the Rockets, but a 6-0 run to end the first frame gave the home team a nine-point advantage through the first ten minutes of play.

In the second quarter, the Rockets, which were picked fifth in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) Preseason Coaches Poll, outscored Findlay 22-16, leaving the Oilers with a 15-point deficit at halftime.

The length of Toledo continued to help drive the team forward as the home squad, in front of more than 1,000 fans, built to what would eventually be a 33-point victory.

Findlay made 19-of-65 (29%) from the floor including 5-of-23 (22%) from three-point range while the Rockets, which scored 38 points in the paint, made 32-of-63 (51%) including 8-of-20 (40%) from deep. UT forced the Oilers into 16 turnovers, which turned into 17 points, and protected the rim well, blocking five shots.

Junior Alyssa Ziehler, a second team all-conference player last season, was the leading scorer for Findlay as she reached double-digits with ten points. She also had three rebounds. Stanley and graduate senior Kate Ellis each scored seven points for UF. Stanley led the team with four assists while Ellis had five boards and a pair of steals.

Senior Janae Hoying and Douglas, who recorded four rebounds, both had six points. Findlay's leading rebounder on the day was sophomore Allie Stockton who had seven boards.

The Oilers will get the regular season started on Friday, Nov. 1 with a game against Grand Valley State University in the D2CCA Tipoff Classic held in Billings, Montana.
