Findlay Falls in Season Opener to #3 Grand Valley State

Billings, Mont.- The University of Findlay women's basketball team kicked off their 2024-2025 campaign with a trip to the D2CCA Tipoff Classic, hosted by Montana State- Billings. The Oilers kicked off the three day tournament with Grand Valley State, on Friday, Nov. 1. The Lakers, who are ranked third in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Preseason Coaches Poll, proved why they are a top-team in the nation, serving Findlay a 92-50 loss. With the win, the Lakers begin their season, a perfect 1-0 while Findlay falls to 0-1.

The team from Allendale, Mich. opened the game with an 8-0 lead through the first four minutes of play. A basket from junior Ella Mescher put the Oilers on the board for the first time but Findlay would only put up eight total points in the first quarter compared to the Lakers' 22.

In the second quarter, the Lakers, which were picked first in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Preseason Coaches Poll, outscored Findlay 28-15, leaving the Oilers with a 27-point deficit at halftime.
The skill of Grand Valley continued to help drive the team forward, building to what would eventually be a 42-point victory.

The Lakers played like one of the best teams in the country as they were hot from the field, hitting 35-of-77 (.455) and 10-of-33 (303) from beyond the arc. Findlay struggled from the floor, making just 17-of-50 shots for 34%, including a 6-for-21 effort from three-point range. Grand Valley forced the Oilers into 25 turnovers, which turned into 22 points.

Senior Kate Ellis led the Oilers in scoring with eight points on 3-of-7 from the floor and a perfect 2-of-2 from the charity stripe. She also had four rebounds. Senior McKenna Stephens recorded seven points while senior Chloe Callahan and Mescher both had six.

Sophomore Allie Stockton was the leading rebounder for the Orange and Black as she grabbed five boards.

The Oilers will continue play in Billings, Mont. on Saturday, Nov. 2 with a matchup against Minot State 11 am MT (1pm EST).
