Preview: Women's Soccer G-MAC Tournament Semifinal

The Game
The University of Findlay women's soccer team has advanced directly to the semifinals of the 2024 Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Women's Soccer Championship, after earning a bye in the quarterfinals.The Oilers, seeded second in the event now face the number-three seed, Northwood University. 

The contest, which kicks off at 3:30 pm on Thursday, Nov. 14, will take place at Ferguson Field on the campus of Ashland University. The semifinal match pits the Oilers against the Timberwolves. In their historical matchups, the two teams have crossed paths 25 times since 2002, with the Oilers holding the narrow historical advantage, boasting a 13-11-1 record. This season, the teams split their series, with Northwood claiming the first game 2-0 in Midland, and the Oilers responding with a 1-0 victory on their home turf just two weeks ago.

Findlay Oilers (10-4-3, 10-3-1 G-MAC) | #2 Seed

The Oilers are 10-4-3 on the season and concluded Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) play with a 10-3-1 mark. 

Findlay enters the semifinal match, averaging 1.76 goals per game, fifth-best in the conference. However, they hold their opponents to an average of 0.76 goals per contest, ranking second-best in the conference. 

Junior Sydney Noble is at the forefront of the Oilers' offensive efforts, leading the Orange and Black with ten goals scored this season. She is averaging .588 goals per contest, the third-most in the G-MAC. Senior Ellie Janszen is having a breakout season for UF, scoring seven goals this year—more than triple her total from the past three years combined—including six goals in seven consecutive games. She also leads the team with four assists.

Junior Payton Miller has been a strong offensive presence as well, adding four goals this season. Notably, six other Oilers have also contributed goals, showcasing a well-balanced offensive effort.

In goal, junior Cat Graves has come into her own. The goalkeeper has logged 618 minutes in net, holding a 5-1-1 record. She has accumulated 21 saves while allowing just four goals for a save percentage of 0.840. 

"We're excited to compete in the G-MAC semifinals and look forward to the challenge Northwood presents," said Head Coach Sierra Tom. "Our team has worked hard all season to reach this point, and earning the bye was a testament to their dedication. We're ready to bring our best effort as we face a strong opponent in Northwood."

The Timberwolves enter the tournament with a 12-2-5 record on the season with a 9-2-3 mark in conference play. Northwood, ranked sixth in the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Poll, advances to the semifinals after a 3-0 win over the sixth-seed, Malone. 

Northwood enters the tournament averaging 2.21 goals per game, ranking second in the conference. Defensively, they allow just 0.84 goals per game, the third-best mark in the conference.

Sister duo of Carly Boyd and Ella Boyd lead the offensive charge for the Timberwolves. Junior Carly Boyd leads the team with nine goals and nine assists for a point total of 27, the third-most in the conference. Meanwhile, freshman Ella Boyd has scored eight goals, averaging .421 goals per game. Impressively, ten other Timberwolves have found the back of the net this year. 

In goal for Northwood, is sophomore Lindsay Jacobs who has recorded over 1,200 minutes in goal. She has allowed just ten goals in fourteen games, recording a save percentage of .839. Most recently, she set a new program record with 13 career shutouts and also holds the record for most career wins.
