Women's Basketball Surges to Early Lead | Defeats Edinboro 80-74

Edinboro, Pa. - The University of Findlay women's basketball team was on the road on Saturday, Nov. 16 for a non-conference affair against the Edinboro Fighting Scots. A big first quarter by the Orange and Black led to an 80-74 victory. With that victory, the Oilers improved to 4-2 while Edinboro, which was undefeated, suffered its first loss and is now 3-1. 

At the first media timeout, the two teams were separated by just two points with UF holding a 10-8 advantage. After that break, the Oilers went on a tear, closing the quarter with a 14-3 run that put them firmly in control. 

Holding a 14-point advantage at halftime, Findlay was outscored by eight in the third as Edinboro tried to claw its' way back. Five points was as close as the Scots would come though as both teams poured in 25 points in the fourth quarter. A nine-point deficit was cut to six at the buzzer as a triple by Ediboro's Morgan Gentile as the horn sounded made the final 80-74. 

Findlay was dominant on the glass, outrebounding the Fighting Scots 44-to-28. The Oilers shot 26-of-54 (48%) including 6-of-19 (32%) from three-point range.  

Senior Kate Ellis led the way for UF, scoring 24 points on 7-of-10 from the floor and 9-of-13 from the free-throw line. Ellis was also tied for the team lead with six rebounds and two steals. In the process of scoring 24, one point shy of her career-high, the Perrysburg, Ohio native reached the 1,000-point mark for her career making her the 25th player in program history to reach that milestone.

Junior Alyssa Ziehler scored 13 points while sophomore Taylor Stanley and senior Janae Hoying each scored 11. Ziehler had five boards and Stanley led the team with three assists. Sophomore MacKenzie Schulz, who had three points, was also tied with Ellis for a team-high six rebounds. 

Findlay will be back in action on Saturday, Nov. 23 for a game against the University of Indianapolis. That contest will tip off at 1:00 pm.
