Findlay, Ohio - The University of Findlay men's basketball team returned home for a non-conference affair on Tuesday, Nov. 26 against the Davenport Panthers out of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). The Oilers would lead for the majority of the contest on their way to an 87-69 victory, improving to 5-1 on the season. Davenport falls to 1-4 with the loss.
Davenport's largest lead came with 5:47 to play in the first half, a six-point advantage at 29-23. To that point, Findlay, which struggled a bit early, had shot just 8-of-24 including just 4-of-12 from deep and had turned the ball over five times.
However, the Oilers found a spark over the remainder of the half, closing the opening 20 minutes on a 17-4 run during which they shot 7-of-8 and forced the Panthers into six turnovers. Seven of those 17 points were scored by freshman Steele Meister.
The second half began in the same way as Findlay went on an 18-5 run over the first six-and-a-half minutes to take a 58-38 lead. A 25-point lead for the Oilers was the largest of the game, a 71-46 advantage with 7:32 to play.
Davenport would trim that lead back to 13 points over the next three minutes, but it was not nearly enough as the home team went on toe earn an 18-point victory.
As a team, the Oilers made 33-of-62 (53%) from the floor including 9-of-23 (39%) from three-point range. They forced the Panthers into 23 turnovers and out-rebounded DU 30-to-28.
Senior Josh Thorbahn finished the game with a career-high 17 points on the strength of 4-of-6 from three-point range. He also snagged three rebounds and led the team with three steals.
Findlay's leading scorer on the year, sophomore Will Aljancic, scored 15 points and led the team with seven rebounds. Junior teammate Jagger Landers had 14 points, three boards, and a career-high eight assists.
Rounding out the Oilers' five players in double figures were sophomore Anthony Johnson who scored 11 points and Steele Meister who scored ten. Johnson had six assists and a pair of steals.
The Oilers will be back at home on Thursday, Dec. 5 with a game against Malone. That contest will tip off at 7:30 pm.
