Findlay, Ohio - The University of Findlay men's basketball team squared off against Malone University on Thursday Dec. 5 for their first Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) match-up of the year. Riding a hot shooting performance from beyond the arc and some aggressive defense, the Oilers would come away with a convincing 103-84 victory. With this win, the Oilers see their record rise to 6-1 on the year and 1-0 in conference play. The Pioneers now stand at 3-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
The first 6 minutes of play were closely contested, as a pair of Pioneer free throws with 13:56 left to play knotted the game up at 13 apiece. This tie would be short lived, as a three pointer from sophomore
Anthony Johnson just 20 seconds later would give the Oilers the lead. The Orange and Black would not look back as they maintained the lead for the rest of the game, seeing it grow to as large as 23 points in the second half of play.
As seen so far from the Oilers this season, their high effort defense put the pressure on the Pioneer offense all game long. Findlay would force 14 turnovers and record 15 points off of turnovers.
Also a common theme so far from the Orange and Black was strong three point shooting. The Oilers would finish the game shooting 17-30 from three, shooting at a 57% clip. This was the second time this season that the Oilers would shoot 50% or better from beyond the arc, as they see their season percentage rise to 40%.
Continuing his strong season to the season was sophomore
Will Aljancic. He would finish with 22 points on 9-14 shooting from the field, including 4-7 from beyond the arc. Aljancic would also add four rebounds and three assists to conclude his day.
Also with a strong performance was sophomore
Anthony Johnson, who scored a season high 14 points. Johnson would go a perfect 4-4 from the field, along with adding assists and three rebounds.
Providing a spark off the bench for the Oilers was
Alex Kendall and
Max Roth, who added 14 and 13 points respectively. Roth would shoot 3-4 from beyond the arc, while Kendall would finish 2-2.
The Oilers will be back in action Saturday, Dec. 7 when they travel to North Canton to take on Walsh University. Tip off will be at 3 pm.
