Columbus, Ohio – The University of Findlay women's basketball team used a monster second quarter to pull away from the Ohio Dominican Panthers on Saturday, Dec. 14 in Alumni Hall in Columbus, Ohio. With that victory, the Oilers improve to 7-3 on the year with a 2-1 record in Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) while ODU falls to 4-5 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
The first period was somewhat sloppy for Findlay, which has now won six of its' last seven games. Having not played a game in a full week, the Oilers shot just 33% in the opening frame, making just 6-of-18 including just 2-of-7 from three-point range. Through ten minutes, Findlay trailed ODU 19-14.
Quarter number two was the decisive portion of Saturday's game and, more specifically, it was the final six minutes that ended up being the difference.
Trailing 28-24 with 5:45 to play in the half, Findlay got red-hot while the home team went ice cold. In that first half closing stretch, the Oilers outscored ODU 24-3 while hitting 9-of-10 from the field and forcing two turnovers. Senior Kate Ellis was the catalyst, scoring 11 points during the run.
In the second ten minutes of the game, Findlay scored 34 points, its' highest-scoring quarter of the season and the most points in a quarter since scoring 34 against Tiffin back in November of 2018.
From then on the game was never closer than 18 points and, at one point, ballooned to as much as 30 when Findlay led 73-43 early in the fourth quarter.
The Oilers won the game with standout shooting while holding ODU to its' second-lowest shooting percentage of the season. Findlay hit 31-of-70 (44%) while making 11-of-30 (37%) from deep while the Panthers made just 18-of-62 (29%) including 4-of-26 (15%) from three-point range. With shots falling from beyond the arc, the Oilers also held the advantage down low, outscoring ODU in the paint 40-26.
Ellis was the leading scorer for UF, pouring in 17 points on 7-of-12 from the floor. Junior Alyssa Ziehler also shot 7-of-12 from the floor to score 14 points. Both Ellis and Ziehler had six rebounds to their ledger.
Sophomore Allie Stockton scored 11 points, making a team-high three triples. She led the way with eight rebounds, three assists, and two blocks. Senior Janae Hoying had eight points, two steals, and three rebounds.
Findlay is back in action on Monday, Dec. 16 when it plays host to Northwood for another G-MAC affair. That game will tip at 5:30 pm in Croy Gymnasium.
