Findlay, Ohio- Playing in their last home contests of the season, the University of Findlay's softball team pulled off two come-from-behind victories to sweep the Walsh University Cavaliers on Sunday, April 14. The first contest was low scoring as the Oilers won by a narrow 5-4 decision before the nightcap featured a slug fest which favored Findlay 13-10. With the sweep, the Oilers improve to 21-17 on the season with a 8-8 mark in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC). Meanwhile, Walsh falls to 11-23 on the year with a 3-7 record in the league.
Game One (W 5-4)
The Cavs took a 4-0 lead through the top of the fourth after putting up a run in the first inning, two in the third, and one more in the fourth.Â
In the bottom of the fourth, the Oilers had two on base with two outs. A single to center field by sophomore Kayla Dykin brought both runners home to bring the game within two.Â
Both teams remained scoreless in the next inning. Three consecutive outs from the defense put Findlay back at the plate in the bottom of the sixth. With the two outs and the bases loaded, sophomore Alexys Antal remained perfect at the plate, recording her fourth hit of the day. Her single to left field scored sophomore Lainey Bingham to put the Oilers within one. Still behind the eight ball, freshman Joslynne Frazier doubled to left center recording two RBI to put the Oilers ahead 5-4.Â
Needing three outs to win, sophomore Emma Jones retired three consecutive batters to give Findlay the win.
The Oilers recorded five runs on eleven hits while committing two errors. The Cavaliers scored four runs on five hits and committed one error.
Dykin started in the circle for the Orange and Black, tossing four innings. She gave up four runs on five hits. She struck out three and walked two. Senior
Molly Pfiffner secured the victory, pitching for two innings without allowing any runs or hits. She struck out two. Jones got the save in the win also throwing a clean sheet.Â
Antal led the way for Findlay recording a perfect four-of-four from the plate. She recorded three singles and a double while collecting one RBI. Bingham was also perfect from the dish, going two-of-two. She also recorded two runs. Despite having just one hit on the day, Frazier recorded a team-high two RBI which would prove to be the game winning hit.
Game Two (W 13-10)
Through the first three innings, the Oilers held a 4-2 lead. The Cavaliers broke through in the top of the fourth, recording six runs. They added two more runs in the top of the sixth to take a six run advantage at 10-4 with just an inning and a half remaining.
Finding themselves in trouble once again, the Oilers' bats came alive in the bottom of the sixth inning. Mayhem ensued as Findlay collected five hits and scored nine runs. Junior Hannah Baker reached on a fielder's choice which would later result in an error by Walsh which allowed a run to score. With two outs and two on base, senior Avery Shepherd hit in a single to center field while collecting an RBI, putting the Oilers within four. With the bases loaded, sophomore Annika Bredel hit a single to center field which brought in two more runs and put the Oilers within two. A third error by Walsh gave UF another two runs and left the game deadlocked at 10-10. Bingham hit an impressive two-RBI triple down the right field line to put the Oilers ahead two. Bingham was later sent home by senior Alissa Davis to put the game on ice at 13-10.
In the contests, the Oilers scored thirteen runs on ten hits while committing two errors. Meanwhile, Walsh scored ten runs on nine hits while committing three errors, all of which came in the top of the sixth.Â
Jones took the win in the circle, pitching just over two innings. She gave up three runs on five hits. Dykin picked up the save, throwing the final inning and allowing just one hit.Â
Antal was once again perfect from the plate, going two-of-two. In the last four contests, the Topeka, Ind. native has been 12-of-12 from the dish. Antal, Shepherd, Frazier, and Briggs all scored two runs. Bredel, Bingham, and Baker all recorded a team-high two RBI.Â
The Oilers will be back in action April 20 as they take on Trevecca Nazarene on the road for a conference double-header.Â
