Cedarville, Ohio- The University of Findlay's softball team swept Cedarville University on Wednesday, April 17 to pick up their third consecutive sweep to advance to a six game win streak. The Oilers won the first game by a score of 2-1 before taking the nightcap in extra innings by a score of 4-1. With the wins, Findlay improves to 23-17 on the year and 10-8 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC). Meanwhile, Cedarville falls to 17-26 on the year with a 10-8 mark in the league.
Game One (W 2-1)
Cedarville put up their lone run early in the contest, scoring in the bottom of the first. The Oilers then tied the game in the top of the third as sophomore Alexys Antal singled through the left side to score freshman Anna Jones.
Findlay went ahead in the top of the fourth thanks to a ground out by senior Alissa Davis that sent sophomore Lainey Bingham home. The next 3.5 innings were scoreless giving Findlay the win in game one.
Findlay scored their two runs with nine hits and committed one error. They held Cedarville to one run on just three hits.Â
The reigning G-MAC and National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Player of the Week, Alexys Antal, threw all seven innings for the Orange and Black. She gave up one run on three hits. She walked one and struck out three.
Antal and Davis recorded the Oiler's lone RBIs. Junior Cassie Warner was a perfect 3-of-3 from the plate.
Game Two (W 4-1)
The first four innings were scoreless as neither team was able to put up a run. It wasn't until the top of the fifth when senior Avery Shepherd singled to left field to send sophomore Rhyli Pope home. Cedarville tied the game in the bottom of the sixth with a run of their own which would later force extra innings.Â
With the score tied at 1-1, the Oilers took advantage of the ninth inning. With one out, sophomore Lainey Bingham singled to center field and later advanced to second thanks to a single by junior Cassie Warner. With two runners on base, senior
Alissa Davis reached on a fielder's choice. Warner capitalized on a Yellow Jacket error, advancing to second, while Bingham scored for the Oilers. Findlay added two more runs thanks to a double by Shepherd.Â
The Oilers then retired three of the four Yellow Jackets to take the win in nine innings.
Findlay scored their four runs on eight hits while committing just one error. Meanwhile, Cedarville committed three errors while scoring one run on six hits.Â
Picking up the win in the circle was sophomore Kayla Dykin. Relieving senior Molly Pfiffner, Dykin threw 2.2 innings. She allowed just one hit. She struck out two. Pfiffner allowed five hits and just one run. She struck out four and walked four.Â
Shepherd led Findlay's offensive charge, going 2-of-5 from the plate. She recorded three RBI in the contest. Sophomore Annika Bredel was 2-of-4 which included a double. Warner also recorded two hits.Â
The Oilers will be back in action as they head south to take on the Trojans of Trevecca Nazarene. The first game of the double header is scheduled for 2pm.
