Volleyball Falls to Tiffin in Five Sets

Tiffin, Ohio- The University of Findlay volleyball team wrapped up a five-game road stretch with a match against the Tiffin University Dragons on Saturday, Sep. 28. The Oilers, who were on a five game win streak, fell to the home team by a score of 3-2 (28-26, 19-25, 25-22, 19-25, 15-12). With the loss, Findlay falls to 10-3 on the season and 3-1 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC). Meanwhile, Tiffin improves to 8-4 on the year with a 3-1 mark in the conference.

Findlay faced a close defeat in the first set, with a mere two-point differential. However, the Oilers seemed to find their stride in the second frame. With the score at 15-12 in favor of the Orange and Black, Findlay recorded six of the next nine points to take a 21-15 lead. They would hold onto that six point lead to take the set and tie the match at 1-1.

In the third set, the Oilers fell behind late. The Dragons led 21-15 but Findlay didn't go down without a fight. They put together a four-point rally to put themselves within two. The Oilers held off Tiffin's match point twice but ultimately fell 25-22. 

Needing to win the fourth set, the Oilers got off to a good start, getting ahead 9-4. Findlay later rattled off seven consecutive points to take an eight point lead at 20-12. A kill from sophomore Hannah Miller put the set away and forced a final frame.

The home team got off to a quick start, taking the first four points of the set. The Oilers brought it back within one before the Dragons rattled off another five consecutive points. Tiffin led 14-8, but Findlay fought off four match points before ultimately falling 15-12.

The Oilers hit .230 in the match, recording 78 kills but making a whopping 36 errors. Meanwhile, Tiffin recorded 52 kills while making just 16 errors, hitting .234 in the match.

Leading Findlay was sophomore Hannah Miller. The Tiffin, Ohio native recorded 26 kills, just five short of the program record. She also added nine digs and two aces.

Freshman Grace Auer recorded 15 kills while hitting an impressive .344. Junior duo Alana Pohlman and Kenzie Hoelscher both recorded double-digit kills. Pohlman recorded 14 while Hoelscher had 11. Freshman Stephanie Smith also recorded 11 kills. 

Leading the Oilers offense was junior Emma White who amassed 61 assists. Defensively, she led the team in digs, contributing 27. Senior Ava Doster chipped in 17. Meanwhile, Pohlman recorded five blocks. 

The Oilers will be back in action Friday, Oct. 4 as they return to Croy Gymnasium to take on the Ohio Dominican Panthers. That contest is scheduled to begin at 7pm.
