Volleyball Wins Season Opener in Three

Clarion, Pa.- The University of Findlay women's volleyball team traveled east to open their season at the Tony Banner Memorial Tournament which is hosted by the Clarion Golden Eagles. On day one of the tournament, the Oilers faced former Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) foe, Davis & Elkins. They swept the match 3-0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-15) to start the year, a perfect 1-0. Meanwhile, the Senators fall to 0-1.

The Oilers found themselves down early in the first set but they rattled off eight consecutive points to take a five point lead at 9-4. They took their largest lead at 21-10 thanks to a kill by junior Kenzie Hoelscher. They would keep that eleven point lead, winning the set 25-14.

Findlay dominated the second set, hitting a match high .571. With the score at 15-10 in favor of the Orange and Black, the Oilers went on a 10-3 run to close out the set and find themselves up 2-0 in the match.

With Findlay holding the momentum, the third set saw much of the same as the Oilers cruised past the Senators, 25-15.

As a team, Findlay hit .379, picking up 53 kills and making 14 errors. The Oilers were able to hold Davis & Ellkins to a .118 hitting percentage. The Senators recorded just 15 kills with seven errors.

The Oilers were by sophomore Hannah Miller. Miller, a second-team all-conference selection last season, recorded a team-high 18 kills on the afternoon while hitting .500.

Freshman Grace Auer made an immediate impact for the Orange and Black recording 12 kills and five digs. Hoelscher hit an impressive .909 while adding ten kills.

Leading Findlay's defense was junior Emma White. White, a first team all-G-MAC selection last season, recorded a team-high 12 digs. She also led the team with 41 assists and four aces. Senior Ava Doster contributed ten digs.

The Oilers will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday, Sep. 7, at the Tony Banner Memorial tournament as they face Shippensburg (10am EST) and Clarion (4pm EST).
