Volleyball Wins Two on Final Day of the Tony Banner Memorial

Clarion, Pa.- The University of Findlay volleyball team concluded the Tony Banner Memorial Tournament Saturday, Sep. 7 as they took on Shippensburg in the morning before facing host, Clarion, in the night cap. The Oilers continued their early season success as they took both matches to improve to a perfect 3-0.

Game One vs. Shippensburg
In their first match of the day, the Oilers won 3-1 over the Raiders (27-25, 19-25, 25-17, 25-20).

Despite getting down early in the first set, Findlay was able to go on a 5-1 run to take the lead at 8-7. From there, the match was back-and-forth as neither team was able to take more than a three point lead. With the score at 25-24 in favor of Shippensburg, a kill from junior Kenzie Hoelscher fended off the Raider's set point which would be a part of a three point run to give the Oilers the first.

Findlay wasn't able to fend off Shippensburg in the second set as the Raiders went on a 6-1 run late, to tie the match.

Midway into the third set, the Oilers used a four point run to give themselves a six point lead. Their largest lead of eight came at 23-15 and the set was put to rest thanks to a kill by junior Alana Pohlman followed by Hoelscher.

The Oilers carried that momentum with them in what would be the fourth and final set. Findlay took an early lead which was capped by a kill from sophomore Hannah Miller to bring the score to 10-3. The Raiders wouldn't go away easily as they put up four straight points. From there the match was back-and-forth until the Orange and Black went on a 5-1 rally to take the match.

As a team, the Oilers hit .359, recording 62 kills and making 11 errors. They held Shippensburg to just a .197 hitting percentage as they finished with 52 kills and 23 errors.

Miller led the way for the offense, tying her season-high of 18 kills that she set yesterday. Hoelscher added 17, setting a career-high. The Ft. Loramie, Ohio native hit .667 on the day. Pohlman chipped in nine kills.

Running Findlay's offense was junior Emma White who recorded a team-high 50 assists. She also chipped in seven digs. Leading the Oilers in that category was senior libero Ava Doster who recorded 14.

Game One vs. Clarion
The second game of the day was the Oiler's second sweep of the Tony Banner Memorial, winning over the Golden Eagles 3-0 (25-18, 25-11, 25-20).

Midway through the first set, the Oilers put together an 8-2 rally which was capped off by back-to-back aces from junior Emma White. With the score at 16-7 the Oilers allowed the Golden Eagles within four at 22-18 but three consecutive points to end the set gave UF the first set.

Thanks to a .556 hitting percentage in the second set, the Oilers cruised to a fourteen point in the second set. The Oilers forced Clarion to a -.038 hitting percentage which included just six kills and seven errors.

The third set saw back-and-forth action until the Oilers took control thanks to four consecutive points to five them a 19-13 lead. The Golden Eagle brought the match within three but it wouldn't prove enough as Findlay cruised to the sweep.

The Oilers recorded the best hitting percentage of the season at .400. They recorded 42 kills and 10 errors. They held Clarion to .179 while allowing 30 kills and causing 15 errors.

Findlay led a well-rounded offense as junior duo Kenzie Hoelscher and Alana Pohlman both recorded 11 kills. Sophomore Hannah Miller also contributed 11. Running that offense was White who amassed 35 assists.

Junior Olivia Pearce recorded five service aces, just four short of the program record which is held by White who added three of her own.

Defensively, White led the team with nine digs followed by Pearce who recorded five.

The Oilers will be back in action as they travel to Upper Peninsula of Michigan on Thursday, Sep. 12 for a four-game stretch.
