Women's Basketball Powers Past Saints with Strong Second Half

Findlay, Ohio- The University of Findlay women's basketball team returned to their home floor where they welcomed the Thomas More University Saints on Thursday, Jan. 23 for a Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) meeting. The Oilers dominated the second half, limiting the visiting Saints to just ten points, to secure a commanding 66-40 victory. With the win Findlay improves to 16-4 on the season with a 9-2 mark in league play. Meanwhile, Thomas More falls to 7-11 on the year with a 4-6 record in the conference.

Despite getting on the board first, Findlay found themselves with a seven point deficit just five minutes into the first frame. Over the next four minutes, the Oilers went on a 6-1 run, forcing six turnovers to cut the deficit to one. However, a late layup by the Saints gave the visitors a three-point lead heading into the second quarter. The second quarter swung in Findlay's favor as they built a four-point lead with eight seconds left in the half. However, a foul on senior Ella Mescher in the final moments sent the Saints to the free-throw line, where they trimmed the lead to two with two seconds remaining before halftime.

The Oilers' defense dominated in the third quarter, holding the Saints to just 13.33% shooting from the field, including 0-for-6 from beyond the arc, and limiting them to six points. The defensive intensity continued in the fourth quarter, where Findlay held the visitors to just four points, securing a commanding 26-point victory.

On the night, the Oilers hit 26-of-68 from the floor (38.2%), including 2-of-13 (15.4%) from three-point range. Findlay held Thomas More to a mere 13-of-51 (25.5%) from the floor and 3-of-25 (12.0%) from three. The Oilers capitalized on turnovers, forcing Thomas More into 18 which they turned into 20 points. Findlay also dominated the glass, grabbing an impressive 48 to Thomas More's 33.

Junior Alyssa Ziehler led the way for Findlay recording her second double-double of the season. The forward recorded 16 points and ten rebounds. She also recorded two blocks and two steals. 

Seniors Kate Ellis and Chloe Callahan both recorded double-digit scoring with ten points apiece. Ellis cashed in from the free throw line, making a perfect six-of-six. Meanwhile Callahan was 2-of-4 from deep while leading the team with three assists.

Findlay will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 25 as they travel to Hillsdale to take on the Chargers at 1:00pm.
