Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Findlay Falls to Hillsdale in Final Minutes, 59-57

Hillsdale, Mich.- The University of Findlay women's basketball team faced off against the Hillsdale College Chargers on Saturday, Jan. 25 inside of Dawn Tibbetts Potter Arena for a Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) matchup. Hillsdale claimed a narrow 59-57 victory in a game decided in the final seconds. With the loss Findlay falls to 16-5 on the season with a 9-3 mark in conference play. Meanwhile, Hillsdale improves to 12-6 and a 9-2 record in the league.

The first six minutes of the game saw both teams trading baskets, with neither side gaining more than a two-point edge. The Oilers then found their rhythm, going on a 7-2 run over the next four minutes, led by five points from sophomore MacKenzie Schulz, to take a six-point lead with 28 seconds remaining in the quarter. However, a costly foul with one second left sent the Chargers to the free-throw line, where they converted all three shots. As a result, the Oilers ended the first quarter with just a three-point advantage.

Findlay and Hillsdale exchanged leads throughout the second and third quarters, with the Chargers outscoring the Oilers 18-13 in the second, only for the Oilers to return the favor with an 18-13 advantage in the third.

The Oilers entered the final quarter with a three-point lead and extended it to six with 7:36 remaining. However, Hillsdale clawed their way back, tying the game at 53 with 2:25 to go. Shortly after, the Chargers went on a 5-0 run, fueled by 3-of-4 shooting from the free-throw line, to take control. Trailing by four, senior Janae Hoying hit a clutch three-pointer with two seconds left to bring the Oilers within one. Despite their efforts, a late foul sealed their fate, and the Oilers fell short, 59-57.

On the day, the Oilers hit 23-of-60 from the floor (38.3%), including 4-of-16 (25.0%) from three-point range. Hillsdale was 19-of-60 (31.7%) from the floor but capitalized from deep with 10-of-26 (38.5%) from beyond the arc. The Chargers took advantage of Findlay's turnovers, converting 16 UF mistakes into 15 points, while the Oilers managed only six points off of Hillsdale's 11 turnovers.

Senior Kate Ellis led the Orange and Black with 16 points, shooting 6-of-13 from the field and 4-of-6 from the free-throw line. She also contributed five rebounds and a team-high four assists.

Junior Alyssa Ziehler posted her third double-double of the season, and second consecutive, with 14 points and ten rebounds. Senior Janae Hoying added 12 points, shooting 4-of-8 from the field and a perfect 3-of-3 from the free-throw line.

The Oilers will be back in action on Thursday, Jan. 30 as they travel to Pepper Pike, Ohio for a G-MAC contest with the Ursuline College Arrows. That game will tip off at 5:30pm.
