Swimming Opens Up Season with Dual Victories vs. Ashland

Findlay, Ohio – The University of Findlay swimming and diving teams delivered a commanding performance in their dual meet against Ashland University on Friday evening at Sink Natatorium. The Oilers, opening up their season, won on both the men's and women's side with the men winning by a score of 206-56 and the women winning 191-70.5.

Women's Highlights

  • Emily Mears-Bentley led the way with multiple wins, including the 100 Fly (55.95) and anchoring the winning 200 Medley Relay (1:43.53). Her time in the 100 Fly meets the NCAA B standard. She also won the 100 Free (52.44) and was a member of the winning 200 Free Relay squad (1:35.75).
  • Katie Susi had a big night, winning four races including the 100 Breaststroke (1:04.59), the 50 Breaststroke (29.70), the 100 Individual Medley (1:00.52), and was a member of the winning 200 Medley Relay team (1:43.53). 
  • Sofia Lesmes Montes was a standout in sprint events, taking first in the 200 Free (1:56.47) and contributing to both winning relays. She also won the 50 Fly (26.04). 
  • Sophie Busby dominated distance events, winning the 1000 Free (10:42.53) and 500 Free (5:13.02).
  • The Oilers swept the podium in the 1000 Free, 200 Free, and 100 IM.
  • Findlay's A relay team of Grubbs, Lesmes Montes, Scheibelhoffer, and Mears-Bentley won the 200 Free Relay in 1:35.75, nearly seven seconds ahead of Ashland's top team.

Men's Highlights

  • Camilo Marrugo set a new school record in the 50 Fly with a 21.43, beating the time of 21.91 set in 2023 by Tim Stollings. He also won the 50 Free (20.12) and was a member of both winning relay teams.
  • Sebastian Camacho, in his first meet at Findlay, cruised to wins in the 1000 Free (9:19.99) and 500 Free (4:29.73), both by wide margins. Both of those times meet the NCAA B standard.
  • Juan Blandon Torres was electric in the sprints, winning the 100 Free (45.99) and 100 Fly (49.55), and leading the 200 Free Relay to victory in 1:22.94.
  • Randy Keener claimed the top spot in the 50 Back (22.89) and 100 Back (49.90), and led off the winning 200 Medley Relay (1:31.29).
  • Findlay swept the top three spots in the 100 IM, with Keener, Camacho, and Nick Beratz finishing 1-2-3.
The Oilers will be back in the water on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 24-25 when they will take on Saginaw Valley State and Northern Michigan in University Center, Michigan.
