Findlay, Ohio – The University of Findlay men's basketball team hosted the Bluffton University Beavers on Friday, Nov. 28 for a post-Thanksgiving affair in Croy Gymnasium. While close early, the Oilers pulled away to pick up a 123-73 victory over its' NCAA DIII opponent that plays in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC). The game, which was an exhibition for the Beavers but a countable contest for the Oilers, was the first time that Findlay and Bluffton have played in basketball since 1994. Findlay is now 5-1 with the win.
The Oilers jumped in front 15-9 in the first five minutes of play, but the Beavers hung around, canning a pair of free-throws at the 12-minute mark to pull within two 23-21. However, over the next three minutes Findlay went on a 13-0 run to take control of the game.
Leading 65-31 at the break, the Oilers reached the century mark with 10:42 to play and were staring down the single-game scoring record of 137 points, but the makes slowed down for the home team which cruised to a 50-point victory.
Findlay shot 49% from the floor, hitting 47-of-97 from the floor including 16-of-43 from three-point range. The 97 field goal attempts are the most in a game in program history.
Senior Mason Brandt, who logged multiple highlight reel dunks, finished with a team-high 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting. He also grabbed five rebounds. Sophomore Ian Ioppolo and senior Luke Denbow each scored 14 points while sophomore Steele Meister had 13. Ioppolo had seven rebounds while Denbow had three rebounds and a four assists.
Senior Anthony Johnson had a game-high seven assists to go with three steals. Sophomore Jayson Levis had four steals and six assists.
Findlay heads into Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) play on Thursday, Dec. 4 when they will host Thomas More. That game tips at 7:30 pm.
