Oilers Advance on PKs in Quarterfinal vs Thomas More

Findlay, Ohio – The University of Findlay men's soccer team battled through 110 minutes of intense postseason play to defeat Thomas More in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw on Saturday, November 8, at DeHaven Field. The Oilers' composure under pressure and a resilient defensive performance — combined with their unbeaten home record this season — propelled them into the G-MAC Tournament semifinals.

Findlay struck first in the 37th minute, as junior Leo Egerer connected with senior Jeroen Van Der Veen, who slotted a shot past the Thomas More goalkeeper to give the Oilers a 1-0 lead. The home side controlled much of the opening half, outshooting the Saints 6–4 and earning five corner kicks before halftime.

Senior goalkeeper Keegan Grant anchored the defense with three first-half saves, preserving the advantage as Findlay's back line limited Thomas More's opportunities.

The Saints found the equalizer late in regulation, converting a penalty kick in the 86th minute to even the score at 1-1. Despite the setback, Findlay remained composed and continued to press forward. Junior Carson Oberski nearly regained the lead in the 96th minute with a powerful effort from close range that was denied by Kendrick, and Egerer forced another save moments later.

Neither team could find the winner through two overtime periods. Findlay finished with a 16–15 edge in total shots and a 7–6 advantage in shots on goal, while both goalkeepers tallied six saves. The Oilers also stayed disciplined defensively, committing just nine fouls compared to Thomas More's 16.

In the decisive penalty shootout, Findlay displayed confidence and composure. Senior Ryan Dickinson opened the scoring from the spot, followed by successful conversions from Carson Oberski and sophomore Joey Chirco. Grant made a crucial stop in net, setting up senior Tom Middleham, who calmly converted the final attempt to seal the victory for the Oilers.

With the win, Findlay improves to 9-5-4 overall and 8-3-3 in G-MAC play, advancing to the G-MAC Tournament semifinals on Wednesday, November 13, at 1:00 p.m. when they face the host school Tiffin University.
