North Canton, Ohio – The University of Findlay men's basketball team saw its' four-game winning streak snapped on Thursday, Dec. 11, losing in overtime by a score of 103-98 to the Walsh University Cavaliers. That defeat gives the Oilers a 7-2 record on the season with a 2-1 record in Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) while Walsh improves to 7-1 with a 2-1 record in the league.
Walsh jumped in front early, taking a 17-point lead just two-and-a-half minutes before the half. Findlay scored the final four points of the half but still trailed 48-35 through 20 minutes of play.
The run continued into the second half for the Oilers who scored the first seven points of the frame to cut the Cavs lead down to six.
Findlay took its' first lead of the game with 2:38 to play in the game, pulling in front 81-80. Walsh responded and eventually held a three-point advantage with eight seconds to play. Senior Mekhi Elmore dribbled up the floor and pulled up for a deep three, banking it in as the buzzer sounded, sending the game into overtime.
The overtime period belonged to the Cavaliers which scored the first four points of the period to take control. A triple by senior Mason Brandt got Findlay within one at 99-98 with 28 seconds left, but Walsh hit its' free throws down the stretch to hang on, earning a five-point victory.
Findlay forced Walsh into 23 turnovers while committing just 11 of their own. What they lacked in ball control, however, the Cavs made up for from the floor, hitting a torrid 38-of-57 (67%) from the floor including 11-of-20 (55%) from three-point range. The Oilers weren't bad themselves, making 36-of-76 (47%) including 10-of-30 (33%) from deep, but it wasn't enough to keep up with the red-hot home team.
Brandt led all scorers with 19 points on while junior Anthony Johnson had 18. Elmore and sophomore Alex Kendall each scored 12. Senior Jagger Landers led the team with six boards to go along with nine points.
Walsh's Brayden Gross scored 16 and Quintero Barnett scored 15 to lead the Cavs' six players who reached double figures.
Findlay is back in action on Saturday, Dec. 13 for a home game against the Northwood University Timberwolves. That game will tip at 3:00 pm.
