Oilers Extend Lead on Day Two of G-MAC / MEC Championship

Canton, Ohio – It was another day of competition at the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) / Mountain East Conference (MEC) Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday, Feb. 13 in Canton, Ohio at C.T. Branin Natatorium. Now half way through a grueling four-day event, the University of Findlay men's and women's swimming and diving teams both remain in first place, each creating more distance between themselves and their competition.

Findlay's women, ranked 12th in the country, are dominating the event and hold first place with 966 points scored, over 300 points clear of three-time champ, Hillsdale College. The Oilers' men, ranked 24th in the country, are in first with a total of 894 points, 174 points ahead of Ashland University who is in second.

Thursday's Top Performances
Women
  • Fresh off a G-MAC title in the 200 IM, Emily Mears-Bentley (Jr.) continued her dominance, winning the 100 butterfly in 54.68. Her time ranks sixth in Division II this season and meets the NCAA B standard.
    • Sofia Lesmes Montes (So.) finished runner-up in the event with a time of 55.45 to meet the NCAA B standard.
    • Touching third was Olivia Scheibelhoffer (Fr.) who clocked in with a time of 55.78, meeting the NCAA B standard.
  • Sophie Busby (Fr.) claimed the 400 IM title with a time of 4:30.11, finishing over four seconds ahead of the competition.
    • Last season's champion in the event, Katie Susi (Jr.), finished runner-up with a time of 4:34.85.
  • Finishing runner-up in the 200 free was Macee Reckard (Jr.) who finished with an NCAA B standard time of 1:53.04.
  • After setting a pool record in the prelims, the Oilers took the title in the 400 medley relay. Earning the title with a time of 3:44.66, over eight seconds ahead of Hillsdale, was the team of Sasha Melnyk (Sr.), Susi, Mears-Bentley, and Sydney Jones (Sr.). This meets the NCAA Provisional mark.
Men
  • After five years of domination from former standout Tim Stollings, the Oilers have their newest winner in the 100 fly in Dags Bregis (Sr.) with a time of 48.86.
    • Randy Keener (Jr.) was right on his heels, finishing in a razor-thin race with a time of 48.87.
  • The 400 IM provided another dominant showing, picking up his second consecutive win in the event, Matteo Filippi (Jr.). He took the crown in the event with a time of 3:56.72 meeting the NCAA B standard.
    • Finishing second in the event was Leland Woestre (Fr.) who touched the wall in 4:04.57.
  • Santiago Arteaga (So.) successfully defended his title in the 200 freestyle, claiming victory with a time of 1:40.03.
  • Keener, Luca Chiandussi, Bregis, and Arteaga flew in the 400 medley freestyle relay, winning the event by eight seconds. They earned G-MAC Champion status with a time of 3:16.15.
