Evansville, Ind. – The men's and women's swimming and diving teams concluded a grueling final week of the season on Saturday, March 14, the final of five days at the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving National Championship.
Findlay's women finished the meet scoring 269.5 points which was good for seventh in the country, the highest finish in program history. Not to be outdone, the Oilers men tallied 167 points which earned eighth place, the second-best team finish in program history.
In short, it was the greatest combined NCAA national championship performance ever for Findlay.
The two teams combined for one national champion, eight national runners-up, and two third place finishes. In total, the Oilers earned 30 first team all-American awards and 29 second team all-American honors. During the week, seven women's school records were broken and eight men's records were broken.
"It's the best nationals meet we have ever had by far", commented head coach Diego Santos. "Words can not explain how proud I feel. This group worked so hard for such a long time and have sacrificed so much. From the beginning of the year, we know it would be a special season and that came true this week."
Championship Medal Recap
Gold - Champions (1)
Silver - Runners-Up (8)
Bronze - 3rd Place (2)
After making history last night with a national title in the 200 butterfly, senior Emily Mears-Bentley dove into the pool as an individual for the final time in her storied career, competing in the 100 freestyle. Mears-Bentley would go on to set a program record with a time of 49.35, a time that came up just shy of a second national title. Mears-Bentley railed by a tenth of a second through the first 50 yards, but was very much in contention. She then put together the fastest final 50 in the field but ultimately came up just one-hundredth of a second shy of the national champion, Kristina Orban of Nova Southeastern. In the morning prelims, senior Troie Grubbs competed for the final time as an individual, narrowly missing out on a trip to the consolation finals. She finished in 19th overall with a time of 50.81.
The first swimmer in the water on Saturday night was freshman Sebastian Camacho who was seeded third in the 1650 freestyle and has already turned himself into the best distance swimmer in program history. He would go on to finish third with a time of 15:03.28 which is a new program record. Through the middle of the race it was clear there were three athletes competing for a title with Camacho being one of them. However, he was facing a historic performance as the winner went on the set a new DII record by more than eight seconds.
After setting a program record and earning the top spot in the morning prelims by posting a 42.56, senior Camilo Marrugo came into the evening finals for the 100 freestyle as one of the favorites to win a national title. Halfway through the race, Marrugo was about a half second off the pace and remained there, earning a third-place finish and first team all-American.
A multiple-time all-American, senior Katie Susi also wrapped up an incredible career in the 200 breaststroke. The Amherst, Ohio native would post a time of 2:14.94 which earned fifth place and first team all-American. Joining her in the event, freshman Helmi Käkelä swam in the consolation finals where she took second with a time of 2:15.12, earning 10th overall.
Earning his place in the consolation finals in the 200 backstroke, senior Randy Keener finished seventh in his heat and 15th overall with a time of 1:47.56.
The final events of the championship were the women's and men's 400 free relays and both teams for Findlay did what they had done all week, competed to the very end.
Troie Grubbs, Helmi Käkelä, Olivia Scheibelhoffer, and Emily Mears-Bentley set a new school record in the race and, swimming in the outside lane, went on to finish runner-up with a time of 3:19.98. That mark was only bested by Nova Southeastern who went on to set an NCAA DII record in the race.
The men's relay team of Juan Blandon Torres, Santiago Arteaga, Sebastian Camacho, and Camilo Marrugo raced in the second heat and went on to finish 13th with a time of 2:55.29.
