Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Fast Start Not Enough | Oilers Fall to #7 Ashland 64-47

Ashland, Ohio- The University of Findlay women's basketball team faced off against the Ashland University Eagles on Thursday, Feb. 27 inside of Kates Gymnasium for a Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) contest. Despite an early surge from the Oilers, the seventh-ranked Eagles dominated the second half to secure a 64-47 victory. With the loss, Findlay falls to 19-9 on the season with a 12-7 mark in conference play. Meanwhile, the Eagles, who picked up their fifteenth consecutive win over Findlay, improve to 26-3 on the year with a 18-1 record in the league.

The Eagles, who have won 27 straight on their home floor, were put behind the eight-ball early as Findlay played two of their best frames of the season.

Findlay set the tone early, forcing three turnovers and holding Ashland to just 4-of-15 shooting from the field and 1-of-5 from deep— just the third time that the Eagles have been held to fewer than ten points in the opening quarter. Meanwhile, senior Chloe Callahan paced the Oilers with six points, helping UF take a four-point lead after the first ten minutes.

The Oilers started the second quarter on a 12-2 run, shooting 5-of-6 from the field and 1-of-1 from deep. UF reached its largest lead at the 6:30 mark when senior Kate Ellis' layup extended the advantage to 14. However, Ashland fought back, cutting the deficit to seven by halftime—just the fifth time this season the Eagles have trailed at the break.

In the second half, Ashland showed why they rank among the nation's best. The Eagles shot 50% from the field (15-of-30) and from beyond the arc (7-of-14) over the final 20 minutes, outscoring the Orange and Black 41-17. Meanwhile, the Oilers went ice-cold, hitting just 4-of-20 (20.0%) from the floor and 1-of-7 (14.3%) from deep, as Ashland pulled away for a 17-point victory.

Findlay's kryptonite on Saturday was turnovers, of which they would commit 21. Those miscues led to 22 points off turnovers. The Oilers shot 17-of-48 (35.4%) from the floor, but struggled from deep, making just 2-of-9 (22.2%) from beyond the arc. AU, on the other hand, hit nine triples.

Junior Alyssa Ziehler led the way for the Oilers as she recorded her sixth double double of the season. The Clinton, Ohio native recorded 14 points and ten rebounds.

Chloe Callahan recorded eleven points on the effort of 4-of-8 from the floor. The senior also grabbed four rebounds while chipping in with two assists.

Findlay will be back in action Saturday, March 1 as they conclude the regular season with a road trip to Painesville, Ohio. They will take on the Storm of Lake Erie College at 1pm.
