Oilers Sweep Day 2 vs Yellow Jackets

Findlay, Ohio - The University of Findlay baseball team was back in action on Saturday, Mar. 22 for the second day of games of their weekend series with Cedarville University.  On a day that saw very high winds and very low temperature, the Oilers would come away with two victories in a pair of low scoring affairs.  With Findlay sweeping the day, the series would end in a split, with both teams taking two games apiece.  The Oilers now stand at 10-11 overall and 3-3 in conference play.  Meanwhile, the Yellow Jackets fall to 11-13 overall and 4-4 in conference.

Game 1 (4-1)
Looking to quickly erase from memory the results of yesterday, the Oilers would get off to a fast start and get on the board first.  In the bottom of the first, sophomore Luke Senften doubled down the left field line to score two and give Findlay an early 2-0 lead.

The Orange and Black would keep their foot on the gas, benefiting from some Yellow Jacket walks and a sac fly to score two more runs in the bottom of the second.  Cedarville would muster one run in the top of the fourth, but that would be all the scoring for the rest of the first game.

Shutting down the Cedarville offense all game long was Findlay pitcher Carson Mellott.  The junior was lights out, throwing a seven inning complete game and only allowing one run.  In exactly 100 pitches, Mellott would also record 11 strikeouts, one shy of his career high of 12.

Game 2 (3-2)
Similar to the first game of the day, runs were hard to come by on both sides.  Due to pitcher's duel between Findlay's Logan Bragg and Cedarville's Tate Marland, the first five innings of the game were scoreless.

The first score of the game would come from the Yellow Jackets in the top of the sixth inning, as they took a 1-0 lead on a bloop single that fell just out of the reach of Mason Myers in the left field for the Oilers.

The sixth inning would be the last on the hill for Findlay pitcher Logan Bragg, who despite not getting the win was excellent for the Oilers.  The graduate student would only allow one run on five hits, also recording six strikeouts on the day.

The Oilers would finally break through in the bottom of the seventh inning, as after recording two quick outs, would rally to score two and take the lead.  Keelan Daniel would single home Casey Maruniak, followed by a frozen rope double from Theo Winings to score Daniel to make the score 2-1.  The Oilers looked to add more, but an Aiden Booth line drive was caught on a great diving snag from the Yellow Jacket center fielder.

Cedarville would add one in the top of the eighth to tie the game at two.  Looking to regain the momentum, Findlay would do just that in the bottom half of the inning.  On the very first pitch, Nick Palm would hit a no doubt blast over the fence in right to take the lead right back.  The home run marked the second of the sophomore's career.

Shutting down Cedarville in the ninth was Camdon Tuttle, who came into the game for Bragg in the seventh inning.  The freshman continued his impressive season, going three innings and earning the win on the hill.  Tuttle would only allow three hits and strike out five.

Quick Stats
Causing problems all day for the Yellow Jackets was Maruniak, who recorded five stolen bases in the second game of the day.  With these steals, the junior has broken his previous record of four stolen bases in a single game, which he has done twice in his career.  Maruniak would finish his day with seven steals, raising his career total to 58.  This marks a new school record, as he passed Scott McLaughlin who finished his career with 57.

Up Next
