Softball Takes Game One, Settles for Split at Northwood

Midland, Mich.- The University of Findlay softball team was on the road on Thursday, March 27, taking on the Northwood Timberwolves, the defending Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Tournament Champions. The Oilers picked up a win in the opener, 4-3, before dropping the nightcap 11-3. With the split, Findlay is now 18-8 on the year with a 5-3 mark in the conference while Northwood moves to 15-11 and 5-3 in the league.

Game One (W 4-3)
Findlay wasted no time jumping ahead, plating three runs in the top of the first. With one out, sophomore Joslynne Frazier launched her fourth home run of the season, a three-run blast to right field, giving the Oilers an early 3-0 lead.

Northwood responded quickly in the bottom half of the inning, cutting into the deficit with a two-run homer of its own. The Timberwolves then evened the score in the bottom of the third, making it a 3-3 game.

The Oilers secured the game-winning run in the top of the fifth when sophomore Anna Jones, the reigning G-MAC Athlete of the Week, launched a solo home run to center field, lifting Findlay to a 4-3 victory.

Junior Alexys Antal got the start for the Oilers, pitching the first three innings and allowing three runs on four hits while striking out two and walking two. Junior Kayla Dykin took over in relief, tossing the final four innings to earn the win. She held Northwood to just two hits, struck out five, and improved to 8-1 on the season.

Game Two (L 11-3)
Game two started at a slower pace, with Findlay and Northwood exchanging runs in the second and third innings. The Oilers took the lead in the top of the fourth when senior Hannah Baker belted a solo home run, putting Findlay ahead 3-2.

Northwood took control in the bottom of the fifth, erupting for six runs, capped by a grand slam to right field from NU's standout, Gianna Fantin. The Timberwolves tacked on three more in the sixth, enforcing the run rule and securing an 11-3 victory over the Oilers.

Senior Emma Jones started in the circle for the Oilers, pitching the first five innings and allowing three hits and five runs, taking the loss. Junior Kora Navarro and sophomore Taylor Morgan also made appearances, each giving up three hits and three runs.
