Oilers Win Game Two Thriller | Split with Griffins

Cincinnati, Ohio - The University of Findlay baseball team once again traveled to Xavier University for a weekend series, this time being a three game set against Seton Hill University.  With the first two games of the series taking place on Saturday, Mar. 8, the Oilers would split with the Griffins.  Seton Hill would take the first game 10-3, while Findlay would win 5-4 in a second game thriller.  After today's results, the Oilers now stand at 6-6 on the year, meanwhile, the Griffins are now 7-3 through their first ten games of play.

Game 1 (3-10)
The story of the first game would be the Griffin's ability to hit the long ball, as they totaled four home runs in the contest.  They would get their first early, as a two out, two run shot in the first inning gave them an early two run cushion.

Seton Hill would quickly tack on to their lead, as two more home runs in the bottom of the second extended their lead to six.  It was an uncharacteristic start for Oilers ace Logan Bragg, who would give up ten hits and eight runs in two innings of work.  Bragg would go on to suffer his first loss of the season.

It would not be until the final two innings of play that the Oilers would get on the board, as Casey Maruniak laced a two run home run over the left field wall in the sixth, followed by a Nick Palm RBI fielder's choice in the seventh.  The late game push would be too little too late, as the game would end in a seven run victory for the Griffins.

Game 2 (5-4)
Despite the lopsided result in game one, the Oilers would not bow down in game two.  Both team's saw their pitching dominate early, as the first three innings of the game would cruise by and see no runs from either side.  Seton Hill would finally break the ice in the bottom of the fourth, scoring two on an single back up the middle.

The Orange and Black would respond immediately, as Maruniak would record his second home run of the day, this one being a no doubt three run shot to give the Oilers a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth.

After Findlay starter Ethan Mohr got two quick outs in the bottom of the sixth, the Griffins would tie the game up at three after a bloop double in no man's land behind third base brought in a run.  Mohr would finish his day going six strong innings, only allowing three runs and recording seven strikeouts.

Seton Hill would strike with two outs once more in the seventh, this time off Findlay's Colin Becker.  An RBI single back up the middle would give them a one run lead.

The Oilers would yet again not back down, as a Theo Winings eight pitch at bat resulting in a walk set the stage for Mike Sciortino, who would rip a single off of the left field wall to bring in two runs.

Coming in to pitch for the Oilers in the bottom of the eight was Camdon Tuttle.  The freshman was lights out, holding the Griffins scoreless in the last two innings of play to earn his second save of the season.

Quick Stats
Leading the Findlay offense was Maruniak, who had two home runs and five RBIs on the day.  The junior now has five home runs and 18 RBIs this season, which are both team highs.

Also with a strong showing was Gavyn Smith, who recorded four hits on the day.  The junior was an extra base hit machine, recording two doubles and a triple.

Up Next
The Oilers are back in action tomorrow, Sunday, Mar. 9 to play the final game of the series.  First pitch is slated for noon.
