Findlay, Ohio - The University of Findlay baseball team was back in action on Sunday, Apr. 13 for the last two games of their Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) weekend series with Hillsdale College. After dropping both games yesterday, the Oilers came back strong, taking both games of the doubleheader today. With the pair of wins, the Oilers see their record rise to 17-18 overall and 9-9 in conference play. Meanwhile, the Chargers drop to 19-18 overall and 12-8 in conference.
Game 1 (12-7)
Looking to erase from memory the events of yesterday's contest, the Oilers would do just that. The Oilers would jump out to an eight run lead after just two innings of play. This early outburst would be capped off with a two run home run from
Gavyn Smith, as the junior sent a blast over the fence in left center for his third of the year.
On the hill for the Oilers was junior
Carson Mellott, who would give the Orange and Black a strong effort. He would go into the sixth inning only allowing two runs, and after two outs just needed one more to make it through six. Unfortunately for Mellott, an Oiler error followed by a two run single and a three run home run for the Chargers brought the score to 12-7. The junior would finish his day going 5.2 innings and allowing two earned runs, also striking out three Hillsdale hitters.
After the offensive struggles in the games yesterday, the Oilers had five hitters record a multi-hit game. Smith and
Luke Senften would both finish the game with three RBIs.
Game 2 (3-2)
Similar to the second game of the first day, the series finale would be a pitchers duel.
Sebastian Stevens would get the start on the hill for the Oilers, as the freshman would go a strong five innings. He would only allow two hits and one run, which came from a sacrifice fly in the second inning for the Chargers.
Findlay would respond in the bottom of the third, as
Nick Palm would score on a wild pitch to even it up 1-1. After a few scoreless frames, the Oilers would add one more on a huge two out RBI single from Palm, which would score
Aiden Booth who doubled the at-bat before.
In relief of Stevens was fellow freshman
Camdon Tuttle, who has been the anchor of the Oilers bullpen all season long. After throwing two scoreless frames, the Chargers would finally crack the reliever, as they tied the game with a two out solo shot in the top of the eighth. This would be just the second earned run the freshman has allowed all season.
After the Oilers squandered a great scoring chance in the eighth inning, the game would remain deadlocked at two going into the bottom of the ninth.
Gavyn Smith would start things off with a lead out double, bringing up Booth to the plate. Findlay had issues with getting the bunt down all day, but when it mattered most the sophomore laid down a beauty to move Smith over to third with just one out. After a Palm walk, the stage was set for Oilers catcher
Austin Adelman. The senior would work it to a 3-1 count, and pitch in the dirt for ball four would skip away from the Chargers catcher, allowing Smith to score and give the Oilers a 3-2 walk-off victory.
Quick Stats
Keelan Daniel had a very impressive day at the plate, as he finished the day 4-5 with a double. The junior also finished with three walks, reaching base in all but one plate appearance. Daniel has now raised his on base percentage to a very impressive .538.
Gavyn Smith and
Austin Adelman would both have breakout days at the plate, as they would finish with four and three hits, respectively. Smith would see his batting average raise over thirty points today, while Adelman would see his raise nearly fifty.
