Findlay, Ohio - The University of Findlay softball team was back in action on Wednesday, April 16 for a midweek doubleheader with regional opponent Saginaw Valley State. In a pair of closely contested ball games, the Oilers would drop both, ending their win streak at nine games. With the losses, the Oilers see their record fall to 27-11.
Game 1 (L 4-2)
In the first game of the day, both teams would see their offense come out blazing hot, as a two-run home run in the top of the first got the scoring started for the Cardinals. The Oilers would respond immediately in the bottom half of the inning, as RBI doubles from
Annika Bredel and
Joslynne Frazier tied the game up at two.
Following both teams trading runs in the first, the scoring would halt for three innings. It wasn't until the top of the fifth that scoring would resume, as Saginaw Valley would add two more on a wild pitch and a steal of home on a first and third situation.
After Findlay would score two runs on three hits in the first inning, their bats would fall cold, not recording a hit for the rest of the ball game. Saginaw Valley's Macy Irelan was dominant in the circle, recording 17 strikeouts and leading her team to a 4-2 victory.
Game 2 (L 10-8)
After a relatively quiet offensive game in the first, the second game saw both teams surpass the ten hit mark. The Cardinals would once again strike first, taking a 6-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth inning. The Oilers would finally breakthrough in the fourth, as an RBI double from
Kora Navarro got the Oilers their first run of the game. An RBI groundout from
Aurora Lescody and an RBI single from Alexis Antal would cut the Findlay deficit to just three.
Saginaw Valley would continue to put their offense on display, extending their lead to 10-4 going into the bottom of the seventh inning. Down to their last three outs, Findlay refused to go down without a fight. With the bases loaded and two outs, Lescody would beat out an infield single to cut the lead to five. The very next batter would be Antal, who would double to the right center gap to clear the bases and bring the score to 8-10. Unfortunately for the Oilers, a groundout in the next at-bat would end the game, securing the sweep for the Cardinals.
Quick Stats
Anna Jones and
Annika Bredel would both record three hits on the day for the Oilers, the only two reaching that mark on the day. Bredel would also record four runs scored on the day, while Jones would finish with two.
Antal would lead the team in RBIs, as her 2-4 performance in the second game allowed her to bring her total to four.
