Pitchers Shine in Doubleheader Sweep of Cedarville

Findlay, Ohio - The University of Findlay softball team got a pair of stellar performances in the circle on Friday, April 18, defeating the Cedarville Yellow Jackets by scores of 5-1 and 6-1. With the two wins, the Oilers improve to 29-11 overall and 16-4 in Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) while Cedarville falls to 17-24 overall and 12-6 in conference play.

Game 1 (W 5-1)
Taking control early on, the Oilers got a single by sophomore Anna Jones to start the first and, after a stolen base, she would come in to score on a double by junior Annika Bredel. A single by freshman Meghan Heinsman and wild pitch sent two more runs home, making the score 3-0 through the first.

Cedarville got a run in the third, but back-to-back RBI singles in the fourth by Bredel and sophomore Joslynne Frazier put Findlay in front 5-1.

Pitching for Findlay, junior Kayla Dykin threw a gem, allowing just one run on three hits in a complete game effort. Dykin, who ranks seventh in the country in ERA, struck out five to improve to 12-2 on the year.

Bredel finished the game 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, and two RBI. Jones had a pair of hits including a run scored.

Game 2 (W 6-1)
The final line score for Findlay's pitcher in Game 2 would be similar, just one run allowed in a complete game effort with only three hits to Cedarville's ledger. However, the route to getting there was different as senior Emma Jones nearly etched her name into the record books.

Jones started the game with 15 batters up and 15 batters down, remaining perfect through five innings.

In the bottom of the fifth, Findlay led 5-0 and had runners on second and third. Three runs away from a potential run-rule which would secure the perfect game, just a single run would score as the teams headed to the sixth with UF in front 6-0.

In Cedarville's half of the sixth, Jones finally surrendered a base on a hit batter, but with the top of the order up, right fielder Aurura Lescody made a spectacular catch, a leaping grab up against the fence which, at the time, preserved the no-hit bid.

The Yellow Jackets finally got in the hit column with three straight singles to start the seventh. A run would score, but the score never got any closer as the Oilers went on to a 6-1 victory.

E. Jones finished with a complete game effort, striking out six batters while allowing three hits and one earned run. She threw just 66 pitches.

Lescody, to go along with her defense, had a big day at the plate, picking up three hits and two runs scored. Junior Alexys Antal had two hits and two runs scored, as well.

The Oilers are scheduled to play at Malone on April 19, but due to weather conditions the game has been moved to Findlay. A start time has not yet been determined. Staffing issues prevent a video stream but the game will be available on live stats at findlayoilers.com.
