Tiffin, Ohio - The University of Findlay baseball team was back in action on Saturday, Apr. 26 for the first two games of their weekend series with Lake Erie College. With the Storm as the home team, the games were held at Heidelberg University in Tiffin. Only ahead of Lake Erie by one win in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) north division, Findlay picked up two big one run victories on the day to push them into third place in the division standings. With the doubleheader sweep, the Oilers now stand at 22-20 overall and 14-10 in conference. Meanwhile, the Storm fell to 19-22 overall and 11-15 in conference.
Game 1 (2-1)
Runs were scarce in the first game of the day, as both pitching staffs were dominant. Findlay pitchers would record 13 strikeouts, while Lake Erie would reach 11 in the game. The Oilers would be the ones to break the ice in the top of the third, as
Luke Senften doubled home
Nick Palm, who reached by way of a walk.
Lake Erie would respond with their lone run of the game in the bottom of the fourth, scoring on a two out RBI single. Findlay starter
Dylan Rouse was shutdown in his five innings of work, only allowing the lone run on two hits. The sophomore also recorded six strikeouts in his way to earning his fourth win of the year.
Coming through once again for the Oilers was Senften, as in the top of the fifth he once again doubled, bringing in
Mike Sciortino to make the score 2-1. Senften would be responsible for driving in both of the two runs scored by the offense in the game.
Closing the door for the Orange and Black was once again
Camdon Tuttle. The freshman was, as now almost to be expected, dominant in his four innings of relief out of the pen. Tuttle would allow no runs on just two hits, while allowing no walks and striking out seven. He would earn the rare four inning save and lower his ERA to a very impressive 1.91.
Game 2 (5-4)
Looking to build off the win in game one, the Oilers would jump on the board early in game two. They would strike for three in top of the second, thanks to
Garrett Given bringing two runs after an error from the Storm shortstop. The third run came from an
Austin Adelman RBI single, who continues to swing a hot bat heading towards the end of the regular season.
Findlay would scratch one more run across in the third, after
Mike Sciortino scored on a wild pitch with two outs. Lake Erie would respond, however, as they would score two in the bottom half of the inning to cut the lead in half.
Following a couple of scoreless innings, a two run homer in the bottom of the sixth for the Storm knotted the game up at four.
With the game scheduled for seven innings, the game headed to extras with the score still knotted at four. An extra inning rule put in place by the conference, every extra inning begins with a runner on second base. The Oilers would score one run in the top of the eighth when Sciortino, who began at second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a
Gavyn Smith sacrifice fly.
Logan Bragg, who would throw three innings in relief, would slam the door in the bottom of the eight. The graduate student would strand the potential tying and winning run on base on the way to giving the Oilers the victory. Bragg would only allow two runs on three hits on the way to notching his third win of the season.
