Third-Quarter Struggles Cost Oilers at #25 Malone

Canton, Ohio- The University of Findlay women's basketball team wrapped up its nearly month-long road trip with a matchup against the 25th-ranked Malone University Pioneers on Saturday, Jan. 10. The Oilers suffered a ___ defeat at the hand of the Pioneers who have now won six of the last seven contests against Findlay. With the loss the Oilers fall to 6-8 on the year with a 2-5 mark in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) while Malone improves to 12-3 on the season and a 5-2 record in the league.

In the opening quarter, the two teams traded baskets, resulting in four lead changes. A three-pointer from junior MacKenzie Schulz gave the Oilers a one-point advantage heading into the second. Findlay then opened the quarter with a 12-3 run over just more than five minutes, shooting 6-of-9 from the field while forcing two Malone turnovers, as the Pioneers went 1-of-8 during that stretch. The Orange and Black pushed their lead to a game-high 29-19 with 3:54 remaining in the first half, but Malone closed the period on a 13-5 run to trim the deficit to one, 34-33, in favor of the visitors.

The third quarter proved costly for the Oilers, as Malone surged late with a 10-0 run in a span of under two minutes, holding Findlay scoreless during the stretch. The run allowed the Pioneers to create separation and build a 54-41 advantage, a margin they carried with them into the final quarter.

Malone maintained its advantage throughout the fourth quarter, but a five-point spurt by the Oilers cut the deficit to eight with just under a minute remaining. Senior Ariyah Douglas knocked down a three-pointer at the 0:25 mark to pull Findlay within five, 69-64. However, Malone answered with a layup followed by two free throws to close out the game, handing the Oilers a 73-64 defeat.

In the game, Findlay made 25-of-61 (41.0%) from the floor including 8-of-22 (36.4%) from three-point range while Malone made 24-of-61 (39.3%) while connecting on 9-of-20 (45.0%) from deep.

The Oilers were paced by senior Alyssa Ziehler, who scored 14 points on an efficient 7-of-11 shooting while pulling down six rebounds despite limited minutes due to foul trouble. Senior Ariyah Douglas added 11 points, including nine from beyond the arc, and dished out three assists.

Juniors MacKenzie Schulz and Allie Stockton each contributed ten points, with Stockton leading Findlay in rebounds with eight and adding a team-high three steals.
