UF Outpaces KWC Down the Stretch to Secure Fifth Straight Win

Owensboro, Ky.- The University of Findlay women's basketball team extended its winning streak to five games on Thursday, Jan. 29, earning a 69-58 victory over Kentucky Wesleyan. Fueled by a dominant second half, the Oilers improved to 11-8 overall and 7-5 in Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) play. The Panthers, who dropped both meetings against Findlay this season, fell to 12-7 overall and 8-5 in league action.

The Oilers, who had dropped seven of the previous eight meetings with the Kentucky squad prior to this season, were locked in a tightly contested battle from the opening tip. The first half featured three lead changes, with neither team building a margin greater than five points. Kentucky Wesleyan held a narrow two-point advantage at the break.

The Panthers opened the second half with a three-pointer, but Findlay responded with a 10-2 run over the next five minutes. The surge, fueled by five Kentucky Wesleyan turnovers, gave the Orange and Black a three-point lead with 4:17 remaining in the quarter, a margin they carried into the final ten minutes.

The final quarter belonged to the Oilers, who outscored the Panthers 23-15 behind an efficient offensive performance. Findlay shot 8-of-9 from the floor in the period, including 2-of-3 from beyond the arc, while also capitalizing at the free-throw line by going 5-of-6. The game was sealed when senior Ariyah Douglas converted a fast-break layup and followed it with a dagger three-pointer, pushing the lead to 11 with just under four minutes remaining—a margin the Oilers never relinquished.

For the game, Findlay made 27-of-47 (57.4%) from the floor including 4-of-10 (40%) from three while Kentucky Wesleyan made 21-of-54 (38.9%) and just 9-of-31 (29%) from deep. The key difference in the game came in the paint, where UF dominated, outscoring KWC 42-24.

Findlay was paced offensively by junior MacKenzie Schulz, who poured in a game-high 19 points. The Strongsville, Ohio native has been on a tear, averaging 17.25 points per game over her last four outings, including Thursday's contest. Schulz shot an efficient 5-of-9 from the floor, knocking down 3-of-5 from beyond the arc, and added six points at the free-throw line on 6-of-8 shooting.

Senior Alyssa Ziehler continued her strong play in the post, finishing with 14 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Junior Allie Stockton also delivered a solid all-around performance, tallying 10 points, a career-high seven assists, and six rebounds while logging 37 minutes. Senior Ariyah Douglas rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11 points.

Findlay returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 31, traveling to Cedarville, Ohio to face the Yellow Jackets at 1 p.m.
