Oilers Lose in Five-Set Battle vs. Hillsdale

Findlay, OH – The University of Findlay volleyball team welcomed the Hillsdale Chargers to Croy Gymnasium for a Friday evening match on October 2. The Oilers fell in a five-set thriller, 3-2 (17-25, 25-19, 25-21, 20-25, 15-9)to drop to 8-7 (5-2 Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC)), while the Chargers move to 8-7 (4-3 G-MAC) on the year. 
 
Findlay, which had won three of the previous four matchups against rival Hillsdale, started the match winning the first set, 25-17. Hillsdale leveled the match after a 25-19 second set win and continued their momentum, winning the third set 25-21. The Oilers would even the match once again after a fourth set win, 25-20. In the fifth and final set, the teams were tied at 7-7 midway through the frame, but a 5-0 run by Hillsdale was the difference, sending the visiting team to victory.
 
The Oilers were led offensively by junior Stephanie Smith, who finished with a career high 21 kills. She addaed three digs and one block assist to her total. Senior Hannah Miller, who has been the Oilers' standout this season, was limited to just 13 kills and .067 hitting percentage by a stingy Chargers defense.
 
Additionally, senior Zoya Winkelfoos finished with 32 assists, complimented by four kills and an ace. Senior Kirsten Bomholt added 15 assists to the team total of 51 in the match. Victoria Mescher led the team with four aces.
 
On the defensive side, the Oilers were led by Miller, who, along with 23 digs, added a solo block on the night. Sophomore Victoria Mescher added four blocks to the Oiler's total of seven blocks on the night. 

Findlay ended the match with 61 kills and an overall hitting percentage of .192, compared to Hillsdale's 64 kills and .227 percentage. 
 
The Oilers return to play tomorrow, October 3, for a midday matchup at Croy Gymnasium against the Northwood Timberwolves at 1pm.
