Baseball Drops Twinbill vs. #20 Seton Hill to Start Season

Wingate, NC - The University of Findlay baseball team opened its 2026 campaign on Friday, Feb. 14 in Wingate, North Carolina, taking on nationally ranked No. 20 Seton Hill in a season-opening doubleheader. The Oilers dropped both contests to begin the year 0–2 while the Griffins start their year 2-0.

Game 1 (L 18-11)

In the opener, the Griffins showed why they are one of the top teams in the country, pouring it on early with four runs in the first inning and, by the end of the fourth, had a 12-1 lead.

Findlay scored three runs in the fifth thanks, in part, to a two-run blast by junior Luke Senften. However, SHU answered with four in the bottom of the fifth to keep the Oilers at arms length.

The Oilers best offensive inning of the day came in the top of the sixth where they would plate five runs and make the score 16-9, but it was not enough as the Griffins held on to pick up the seven-run victory.

Senften went 3-for-5 in the game with a double, a home run, and five RBI. Sophomore Mason Myers had two hits, including a double, and two runs scored while freshman Evan Reiter had a couple hits and a run scored in his collegiate debut.

Starting pitcher Carson Mellott took the loss on the hill, throwing  2.1 innings and allowing eight runs on ten hits while walking one and striking out one.

Game 2 (L 12-2 | 8 inn.)

Seton Hills, the visitors in the second game, plated three runs in the second to take an early lead, but in the bottom of the fourth, Findlay came back with a pair of scores to make it 3-2. Those runs came in courtesy of a sacrifice fly by Reiter and a passed ball that allowed Myers, who singled in the inning, to score.

From then on it was all Griffins. SHU went on to score nine unanswered runs to win the shortened game 12-2.

Senior Mike Sciortino and Myers each had two hits in the game.

Junior Aidan Kiessling started and took the loss in the game, tossing two innings and allowing three runs on just one hit. He walked six and struck out five.

Due to rain in the forecast, the finale of this three-game set will now be played on Modnay, Feb. 16 at 11 am.
