Oilers Split Pair on Second Day of Highlands Classic

Tridelphia, W. Va.- The University of Findlay softball team continued action at the Highlands Classic on Saturday, Feb. 21, facing West Liberty University and the University of Indianapolis. The Oilers powered past the Hilltoppers, 16-3, in the opener before dropping a 6-0 decision to the 15th-ranked Greyhounds in the afternoon contest. With the split, Findlay moves to 2-1 on the season, West Liberty falls to 2-5, and Indianapolis improves to a perfect 9-0.

Game One vs. West Liberty (W 16-3)
The Oilers put on an offensive clinic in a 16-3 run-rule victory over West Liberty, just their second game of the season. Findlay scored 16 runs on 16 hits, capitalizing on several multi-run innings with a relentless attack at the plate.

The first three innings featured back-and-forth scoring, with the teams tied 2-2 heading into the fourth. In the top of the inning, the Oilers broke through to score three runs. Freshman Sophie Retton ignited the rally with a leadoff double, and senior Kora Navarro followed with a single to right. With runners on the corners, junior Anna Jones delivered another single to bring Retton home. Senior Annika Bredel then added an two RBI single of her own pushing Findlay ahead 5-2 and swinging the momentum decisively in the Oilers' favor.

West Liberty added a run in the bottom of the fifth, but the decisive blow came in the sixth as Findlay erupted for 11 runs on seven hits. The inning was highlighted by a bases-clearing triple from Bredel, accounting for two of her game-high five RBIs. Run-scoring hits from Navarro, Jones, and senior Jenna Poulson kept the offense rolling, while multiple walks and Hilltopper errors fueled the outburst. By the end of the frame, the Oilers had built a commanding 16-3 lead, securing the run-rule victory.

Bredel once again paced the offense, going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate while scoring two runs and driving in a season-high five. Jones also turned in a strong performance, finishing 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs.

Navarro earned the win in the circle for the Orange and Black, working four innings to improve to 1-0 on the season. She allowed two runs on six hits while striking out four. Retton closed out the game for Findlay, tossing the final two innings in her collegiate debut and surrendering just one run while recording one strikeout.

Game Two vs. #15 Indianapolis (L 6-0)
Facing one of the nation's top programs, the University of Findlay softball team battled throughout but ultimately fell 6-0 to 15th-ranked Indianapolis.

The Greyhounds set the tone early, pushing across a run in the opening inning before adding another in the third. A decisive four-run fourth inning created separation, as Indianapolis capitalized on timely hitting to build a commanding lead.

Findlay was limited to just two hits on the afternoon, coming from sophomore Kenzie Woods and freshman Kaylynn Carter, who each recorded singles.

Senior Alexys Antal was charged with the loss in the circle for Findlay, moving to 1-1 on the season. She allowed five runs on nine hits over 3.1 innings, striking out four and walking two. Carter made her pitching debut for the Orange and Black, working the final 3.2 innings and surrendering just one run on six hits while recording two strikeouts.

Findlay will wrap up the Highlands Classic on Sunday, Feb. 22 with a 10 a.m. matchup against West Liberty followed by a 12:30 p.m. game against Wheeling.
