Oilers Extend Winning Streak With 81–72 Over Ursuline

Findlay, Ohio - The University of Findlay women's basketball team used strong second- and third-quarter performances to pull away from Ursuline, earning an 81–72 Great Midwest Athletic Conference victory Thursday, February 5, at the Croy Physical Education Center. The Oilers improved to 13–8 overall and 9–5 in G-MAC play, while the Arrows dropped to 5–17 (2–13 G-MAC).

The game opened as a tightly contested battle, featuring five ties and one lead change in the first quarter. Ursuline held an early edge behind Courtney Barwick, but Findlay responded with perimeter shooting from junior MacKenzie Schulz and interior scoring from senior Alyssa Ziehler to take an 18–16 lead after one.

Findlay began to create separation in the second quarter, opening the period on an 8–0 run capped by consecutive baskets from Ziehler and junior Allie Stockton. The Oilers held Ursuline to 36.4 percent shooting in the quarter while forcing key turnovers that led to transition opportunities. Schulz knocked down two three-pointers in the frame, helping Findlay outscore the Arrows 21–14 and take a 39–30 advantage into halftime.

Momentum stayed with the Oilers coming out of the break. Findlay shot 66.7 percent in the third quarter, scoring 25 points in the period. Ziehler controlled the paint with multiple putbacks and finishes through contact, while senior Ariyah Douglas connected from beyond the arc to keep the lead in double figures.

Despite Ursuline shooting 73.3 percent in the quarter, Findlay maintained control thanks to second-chance points and efficient ball movement, entering the fourth ahead 64–54.

Ursuline made a late push in the final period, trimming the deficit to single digits, but Findlay answered at the free-throw line and on the glass. The Oilers attempted 10 free throws in the fourth quarter and secured several offensive rebounds to bleed the clock. Schulz iced the game with late free throws, while Ziehler added key rebounds to seal the 81–72 victory.

Ziehler led Findlay with 22 points and 10 rebounds to record a double-double. In the third quarter, Ziehler's fifth rebound of the game gave her 700 in her career, making her just the sixth player in program history to reach that mark. All six have also been 1,000 point scorers.

Schulz added 20 points on 4-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc, and junior Ella Mescher chipped in 10 points. Findlay finished with a 40–26 rebounding advantage and scored 20 second-chance points, proving decisive in the conference win.

The Oilers will look to continue their seven-game winning streak when they host Tiffin on Saturday, February 7, at 1 p.m. inside the Croy Physical Education Center.
