Melbourne, Fla.- The University of Findlay softball team continued action at the Space Coast Games on Monday, March 2, completing its second day of play during a five-day stretch of games. The Oilers faced Holy Family University in the afternoon before closing the day against Davenport University. Findlay earned wins in both matchups, improving to 8-1 on the season and extending its win streak to six games.
Game One vs. Holy Family (W 5-2)
Findlay battled back from an early deficit to secure a 5-2 victory over the Division II program from Philadelphia. With the loss, the Tigers drop to 0-2 on their young season.
Holy Family struck first in the bottom of the first, pushing across two runs. A sacrifice fly brought home the opening run, and a groundout plated another to make it 2–0 after one.
Findlay answered in the third to get on the board. Sophomore
Kenzie Woods came around to score when senior
Annika Bredel singled to shortstop for an RBI, cutting the deficit to 2–1.
The Oilers took control in the fourth with a two-run swing. With runners on, freshman
Jenna Dee delivered a clutch double down the left-field line, driving in two runs to put Findlay in front, 3–2.
Findlay added an insurance run in the fifth. Junior Anna Jones singled up the middle, bringing home Bredel to extend the lead to 4–2.
The final run came in the seventh. After sophomore
Meghan Heinsman put the ball in play, Findlay capitalized on a throwing error, allowing Woods to score again and make it 5–2.
In the circle, senior Kora Navarro picked up the win after tossing four innings, improving to 2-0 on the season. She allowed two runs on three hits, striking out one and issuing three walks. Freshman Sophia Retton was strong in relief, throwing three shutout innings to close the door. She did not allow a hit or a run.
At the plate, Woods crossed home twice and tallied two hits, while Bredel added an RBI and created havoc on the basepaths throughout the game. She swiped three bases, tying the single-game program record, and now sits at 58 career stolen bases — just three away from the school mark set in 1989. Dee's two-RBI double ultimately stood as the decisive blow, helping the Oilers erase an early first-inning deficit and rally for the win.
Game Two vs. Davenport (W 7-1)
The University of Findlay softball team used a big fourth inning to pull away from Davenport, earning a 7–1 victory. With the loss, Davenport falls to 1-9.
The Oilers struck first in the bottom of the second inning, capitalizing on early pressure. After putting runners on, freshman Addison Fisher drew a walk that allowed senior Jenna Poulson to move to third, and senior Aurora Lescody to come home on a throwing error by the catcher to give Findlay a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, sophomore Kenzie Woods delivered an RBI single to left center, bringing in Poulson and extending the advantage to 2-0.
The Panthers trimmed the lead to 2-1 in the top of the fourth, capitalizing on a bunt that led to a fielding error and a run crossing the plate.Â
The Oilers wasted no time responding in the bottom half, erupting for five runs to seize full control. Senior Cassie Warner ignited the rally with an RBI double to center to push the lead to 3-1. Senior Annika Bredel followed with a productive groundout that plated another run, making it 4-1. Sophomore Meghan Heinsman delivered the decisive blow, lacing a two-run double to left field to extend the advantage. Senior Alexys Antal then put the finishing touch on the inning, drilling a double down the left-field line to score Heinsman and stretch Findlay's lead to 7-1.
Senior Kayla Dykin continued her dominance in the circle, picking up the win and improving to 2-0 on the season. She threw five strong innings, allowing just one run on two hits while striking out six. Sophomore Taylor Post came on in relief to finish the final two innings, giving up only one hit and recording one strikeout to help secure the victory.
Woods paced the offense once again, going a perfect two-for-two at the plate while scoring a run and driving in another. Heinsman, the reigning Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Athlete of the Week, led the team with two RBI.
Findlay returns to the diamond on Wednesday, March 4, opening the day against the University of Charleston at 8 a.m. before taking on Roosevelt University at 12:15 p.m.
